He's likely hiding because he assumed his dad would get mad at him for messing with the balloon. From what I read about the father, he's a bit of a hothead, so it would make sense for the kid to take off and hide. Little guys like that can hide really well.

I'm telling you guys, little guys like that can tuck themselves in to the tiniest of spaces. I found my youngest sleeping in the back of our linen clost behind the quilts one day. He was playing hide and seek with his brother and he fell asleep back there. He'd been napping for a good hour before we found him, and I ran through the house at least 3 times, thinking I'd looked everywhere. I did look in the cabinet, but not on the bottom shelf behind the quilts. I've since learned that when you're looking for a child, you need to look at the area from the eyes of a child.

When I worked in retail, we were trained that when a child is missing, we need to look inside clothes racks. They said 90% of the time, they find the kid hiding inside a clothes rack where most adults would never think to look.
