When we were kids, my older brother used to scare my sister sister by saying he was going to flush me down the toilet so the Tidy Bowl Man could have me. He'd take me in the bathroom and I'd scream, and then tuck myself into the towel cabinet. Good times.

He's likely hiding because he assumed his dad would get mad at him for messing with the balloon. From what I read about the father, he's a bit of a hothead, so it would make sense for the kid to take off and hide. Little guys like that can hide really well.
