The rest can go in almost any order because I am not very invested in them as people. I don't care much about the order of the lesser chefs, or even, ultimately, the order of the better chefs. I just think that divide between the two levels is so great that I would feel bad if ANY of the chefs from the upper echelon went home before any of the lesser ones...

I agree, although if it was ever simply Bryan vs. Jen it would be like watching "Battle of the Robo-Chefs." But it would be amazing food. The one top4 chef who I could deal with going is Michael V. To me he's the logical F4 boot, so if he goes a little early it doesn't change the show for me. But if the finale isn't Bryan/Kevin/Jen, something is seriously wrong (or the editors are making serious omissions). It is painfully obvious that Robin and Laurine can't even conceive of food on the level of the top 4; Eli and Mike Isa can understand it but can't make it. I mean, c'mon - can you imagine Robin or Laurine even thinking to include hazelnuts in a dish because there are hazelnut trees near the vineyard the wine is from?

Posts: 993 (10/19/09 5:17 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	The more I watch this show, the more I see the tension is between "technique" and "passion" -- both in the food and in the way the chef presents him/herself to the judges, the other chefs and to the diners. Someone who can balance these two tensions on both spectra is amazing -- and rare. (The first to come to mind is Richard Blais. At the start of the season he was too technical and gadget-y, but he loosened up and struck a nice balance of passion and technique.) I think People usually err a little to one side or the other. (Stephan as technical and icy in persona; Carla as effusive in personality and cooking style.) What's interesting are people who "mix-and-match" the plate and the persona: a person who is effusive in pesonality but presents food that is technical but not flashy. And visa versa. In my observation, totally emotional but not technical people (Betty) go before the robo-chefs (Casey). Anyway, I'm just trying to keep the show alive until Wednesday. I love restaurant wars. It really tests the chefs' mettle, and it's high risks for whomever ends up being the head chef for each time. It's all-or-nothing. ANYONE could go home.

I want the chefs to sink or swim based on their own performance alone...

I think the restaurant wars has the sole purpose of the judges being able to make a "shocking elimination" and getting rid of one of the front runners for the sake of some lame ass ratings ploy. I HATE IT. One of the Top 4 is going home this week and it will be total bullshit when there are people like Robin/Eli/Latrine and arguably Mike still in the competition.

Posts: 2202 (10/19/09 8:53 PM) Registered user Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	I like restaurant wars in the sense that it's one of the earlier opportunities for some of them (usually the leaders) to demonstrate what they feel they do best without the constraints of a small, limited theme. But more often than not, it does translate into a drama-fest with someone undeservedly leaving. I'm going to be so bummed if one of the top 4 leave - obviously only one from those four will ultimately win (I'd put money on the winner being one of those four) but finding out what each one of them come up with week to week is the main reason for me to watch this season. I'd say talentwise, those four are the best "top 4" this show may have ever had.

So what? When they open a restaurant, they will HIRE a maitre d'. They will HIRE a designer. They will design their restaurant with something more than a few hundred dollars worth of Pier 1 crap and a few hours to throw it all together. This tells us NOTHING about how they will actually run the front of house or design their restaurants. What it may show, to an extent, is how they will design and execute a menu. However, because it is collaborative, even that doesn't tell us what we need to know about any of the chefs, including the head chef.

One of the most memorable comments I remember from judges table was when a contestant said, "I don't have great technique, but I have great flavors." Tom responded, "But technique is how you create flavor." A very important and insightful comment. Tom sees that you first need great technique - you have to cook things properly, chop things evenly, etc., because any flaws in technique make it harder to create flavor. So the non-technical people go first. Then the technical people battle it out over their creativity.
