A small-market team needs to build its organization around players who have the talent of the top-tier stars but also a love of the game that trumps their
desire to become rich. A small-market owner needs to convince his free-agency players that Ripken, Gwynn, and Puckett are among this generation's favorite
stars because they didn't follow the money, they let other players and millions of fans follow them. They're in the Hall as much for their intangibles
as for their talent. Once you get past about $10 million the higher numbers don't really matter, you're rich no matter what. You can choose to be rich
as an also-ran in pinstripes or you can be the standout star on a team and fanbase that would truly appreciate you and make you their leader for as long as you
chose to play the game. And that message needs to be louder than the silky whispering of agents in players' ears.

That's almost poetic.
So you're worried about Mauer? |

Carl Crawford - the only CC that matters. |

I'm not worried about Mauer, the team will sell itself to Virginia to raise the money for Mauer. I'm worried about the team we build around Mauer. If
we spend too much on him then he'll just be a lonely .350 hitter on a fourth-place Boston farm team. To use the Twins as an example, they're a winning,
competitive club, with a national fanbase and an excellent reputation. All indications are that every guy on the team loves playing there. So what they need to
be convinced of is, if you're having fun, and winning, and kids in the heart of the south side of Chicago are wearing your jerseys, why leave? If everyone
stays, nothing changes, you still have fun, you still win, and you still earn just as much if not more respect from the entire country. Play as a team and stay
as a team.

We'll see how your team does now that they'll have to play outside in the cold for 2 months a season. White Sox will pwn the Twins next season. |

Antithesys wrote:Totally agree. It's just the lure of money. When the players start to realize there really isn't a huge difference between $20 million and $30 million (you're rich either way) and it's not a sign of one's importance, things may calm down. I'm in area with a lot of major league prospects out of high school. The Twins are one of the three teams that are often touted as great minor league franchises to go to. On a side note, didn't Morneau say he'd never talk Mauer again if he went for the big bucks? |

But I have been lucky enough to take my family to many Lakewood Blueclaws (single A Phillies team) games since they came into existence, and have seen Hamels, Howard, Ruiz,Tejada, and Victorino get their feet wet there. Even though I don't like the Phillies, I am going to root for them because of their homegrown nature. Oh, and the Yankees are evil. |

thecolbster wrote: Agreed the 10M may not make much of a difference by and of itself, but if that extra 10M makes you the highest paid 2B, SS, etc, in the game or on the team, it's a big deal. I've always been a huge Twins fan for this reason: it's always been a solid organization that does things the right way, plays the right way, and knows its limits. If they can't afford someone, off he goes and yet they manage to carry on. And this is where I have an issue. Wasn't Carl Pohlad the richest owner in baseball? (when he was alive) I think he could have shelled out a few more clams. |

On talent alone, they should. But I don't underestimate Girardi's ability to give a game away. Or hopefully two.

At least force a game 7, make the Yanks fans sweat a little.

Unless you live within a hundred mile radius from Manhattan, I don't understand how anyone can be a Yankee fan.
