My prob with last night's ep is this. We spent a lot of time on them trying to get funding. That was unnecessary. Up until this week, in the viewer's eyes, they had funding. So why take it away? It was almost a waste of time that could have been spent on moving forward the storylines they had already started. Instead, we were thrown new storylines regarding the President/new female VP who claims to take over. I didn't actually mind the part about Benford's FF now seeming to lack credit because of his drinking, but they could have easily found another way to bring that out.

Like, last week they ended the episode with Simon calling Simcoe. And then that storyline was completely dropped in favor of this one. So that storyline didn't move forward, it just remained stagnant. That's sort of what I meant about the writers dropping things on us and then not following up. And it's why they're trying to do too mcuh. The show would be a lot better if they just focused instead of trying to throw all these mysteries at us like, "ooh now the viewer will want to know how the woman becomes Pres." But I don't. That storyline is extraneous to the ones they've already established and I just don't care right now. It's lacking any stakes for our current characters, our protagonist, and the viewer.

Don't get me started on the annoying aspect of characters misinterpreting their visions. That's misleading the viewer. Ex: we only know that Penny/Olivia (I had to look up her name) is cheating because she told us she was cheating and that she had "strong" feelings. If that turns out to be untrue, I'm going to be annoyed, because they didn't SHOW me that she might be cheating (I mean, she stands at the top of the stairs and calls a guy an endearing name. That could have a lot of explanations). I get that the characters are trying to figure it out themselves, but unless they are lying (which I approve of if there's good motivation for it), then the writers delibrately misleading the viewer by having the characters misinterpret what they saw is just bad mystery plotting and storytelling. Unreliable narrators can be very interesting if done well. But when done only to give a false sense of drama, it's weak writing. There are other ways to heighten drama, and the way to do it would be relying on something other than the characters telling us what they think they saw and instead showing the viewer something that can be interpreted in several ways. Another good ex: the girl who sees herself being drowned and says it's because she's being punished. Seeing herself being drowned is mysterious enough--the viewer will want to know why. She could be questioning it. It could have mulitple answers and lead to a lot of speculation. The TELLING/potentially misleading part comes in her intepretation that "she deserved it." We can't deduce that from the FF itself, so the only way we have of knowing it is BECAUSE SHE TOLD ME. So again, if she misinterprets, it will be annoying because it's misleading the viewer by forcing them to think what the writers want instead of letting them interpret for themselves.

That being said, I'm thrilled they have a new showrunner. I'm hoping things get better because of it, though sadly we prob won't see the results of the new showrunner until the spring.
