Does Indian food taste better than it looks?

Appleman was consistantly full of himself, way over confident. It wasn't very attractive. Glad he's gone.

I thought for sure Alton would hand Appleman the ticket, because you just know the producers want to keep him in since he's an asshole and will piss off
the other chefs, but nope. :) You should have given out the TU-nah!*
*My impersenation of Schwartzenegger's "It's not a TU-MUH!" I know, I failed. So random though that Garces won. Mehta and Freitag had a lot more positive comments about their platters, and yet he won? I blame Steingarten, that asshat. |

I keep thinking that they are letting Freitag through because she's on Chopped and wouldn't it make Food Network look bad if they'd of tossed her
early. I remember watching Mehta when he was on Iron Chef - he lost but I really thought it was rigged. According to the Food Network magazine Garces is the
only one that has been on and beat one of the current iron chefs (Flay) - I'm hoping Mullen is out next - I can't think that his style will bring them
anything they don't already have.

Definitely. I think Indian/Mexican/Chinese (the populist foods) always seem to focus more on taste than presentation - which seems to be more consideration of like.. a French and other western cuisines. I guess it was the vile banana Appleman served which gave him the boot. That and... was it him for whom they kept saying "this is good, but not indian". |

nomii wrote: I always think that presentation is somewhat bullshit. You're going to destroy the presentation by eating it, so what's the point of dressing it up? Taste is much more important than presentation. ETA: Never had Indian food perse, more like cafeteria chicken tikka and marsala rice. It made my stomach queasy. Mexican and Chinese food is fucking awesome! :D |

Prior to this episode, I would have said that the two who were shoe-ins for final four would have been Mullen and Appleman, so it was really weird to see them
both on the bottom. Trevino was an obvious boot, as I don't think he's done much right all competition.
I really can't stand Mehta, and would have LOVED it if he had gone out on the Indian challenge! |

I was confused by Appleman saying during the opening challenge that he's had a dish in Indian restaurants before (a braised cauliflower and potato dish I
believe) and yet throughout the rest of the show kept commenting on how he's never even cooked an Indian dish before.

I ADORE Indian food. Yum yum yum yum yum! It really WAS odd to see beef used, however; though there is a great local place that serves beef on their menu. Must
not be Hindu.

Love the Iron Chef-esque voiceover with the Japanese judge! XD

I have no idea, Timmy. Shocked that Frietag was canned...Mullen, Mehta, and Garces left. Wow. I have a feeling Garces is going to pull through, unfortunately.
I don't particularly like any of the remaining chefs, especially Mehta. Hoping for a Mullen win, though.

Food Network can go suck my left nut. Buncha hacks who don't know shit about editing...
MEHTA ftw!!!!! |

Well I'm bummed Freitag was eliminated. I didn't see it coming since she seemed to get the most positive comment from the Japanese judge. I was
hoping for another woman Iron Chef, especially one that might be better than Cat Cora. I really don't care who wins anymore. I think it will be Mehta,
though. I don't know why. If not him, Garces. I think they think they got enough white guys on the team.

That was the strangest edit ever. Sure looked like Garces & Mehta were going to be the bottom 2. Really like Garces (can't stand Mehta) but
that's 2 weeks in a row where I'm left shaking my head about the outcome.

i guess someone said it right on here-FN sucks at editing stuff, or you have to give them props for not afraid to give a winner an extremely unlikeable
edit...i dunno.

Why is it that I always get the impression from the judges that they do not like Garces' dish, and yet he wins? I swear he gets a lot of negative comments,
but he always wins. So confusing. Horrible editting.
Winner indifference. |

I think it was BRILLIANT editing. They completely threw us for a loop by editing it down to things that REALLY misled us. And I TOLD you people they would not
choose Freitag. I would have thought she would last another week or so; but I knew she was not different enough from Cat Cora to be the next female Iron Chef.
Now I wonder if the typical "I am going to be the next Iron chef" is actuallya red herring. Normally, that is the kiss of death. Garces has said it twice, now. But I think he is the most likely to win. If Mullen DOES win, it will be odd since he is the least different from the currenct ICs. I could deal with a Mehta win, though. He would be annoying, but it might be amusing to watch him freak out on a semi-regular basis. |

Umami is real. There are specific taste receptors dedicated to it, like for the others. The umami taste is due to the detection of the carboxylate anion of
glutamic acid, a naturally occuring amino acid common in meat, cheese, broth, and other protein heavy foods (from wiki). It's based on certain salts, for
example MSG. There are probably other taste receptors that haven't been labeled yet too, but umami's specific receptors have been identified and
labeled.
