Screw you, Beefcake!
Anyhow, this is the story about the cheerleader... I'm having a hard time believing no one here has started a thread about her. WASHINGTON, D.C. - An Ashburn, Virginia woman is in the fight of her life after suffering a very rare side effect to the seasonal flu shot. The vast majority of doctors say flu shots are safe. In this case, the FDA says they found nothing wrong with this particular batch, but sometimes there are complications. That's apparently what happened to Desiree Jennings, and now her life will never be the same. At 26 years old, Desiree Jennings was the picture of health. She's a Washington Redskins cheerleader and an avid runner. Her life changed forever on August 23 when she says she got a seasonal flu shot at a local grocery store. "I was training for a half marathon then," said Jennings, crying. "It just all went so fast." Ten days after receiving the shot, she came down with the flu. After that, her health spiraled downwards. She started passing out and had to be hospitalized twice. "We went to an urgent care place and they wouldn't even let her get out of my truck because she was seizing in the back so bad, so they called an ambulance immediately," says her husband, Brendan Jennings. Doctors at Fairfax Inova and Johns Hopkins diagnosed her with a rare neurological disorder called dystonia. They think it was caused by a severe reaction to the flu shot. Desiree now has difficulty speaking, walking, and even eating. During an interview with FOX 5, she had several seizures. The effects are irreversible. "The symptoms will get worse if I use my voice or walk when the brain signals are misfiring," says Jennings. Desiree reported her health problems to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) thinking there might have been something wrong with her vaccine. We also contacted the FDA and we were told they found no problems with the particular lot of flu vaccines that Desiree received, and the agency has not received any other reports of adverse effects from this lot. Health experts stress that overall, extreme side effects are rare. "The flu shot is safe for the majority of the public, and as I said before, your heart goes out to someone that experiences this sort of thing-- thinking that they are doing something great for their wellness and their general health, but it does happen in extremely rare cases," says Rachel Lynch with Fairfax Inove Health System. For Desiree, she just happened to be one of those rare cases. "I just don't want this to happen to anyone else," says Jennings. Desiree and her husband plan to visit the Mayo Clinic in Arizona in November. They're hoping to get more answers about this disease and how they live with it. Desiree has received flu shots before in 2007 and 2008. Link:http://www.myfoxdc.com/dpp/health/101309_woman_disabled_by_flu_shot_reaction_dystonia |

Both of my kids got it. It was VERY mild. One had a fever and sore throat. The other with asthma, had sneezing and a high fever. He got the tamiflu. I am just
waiting to get it myself... hopefully it will be just as mild.

Soooo....can you get the same type of flu again in the same flu season? Just wondering if its worth it to get the shot once I feel better. |

If it's really what I have then I must say it's not that bad. Unless these are only the beginning stages.
Also, OT question, but can anyone see my avatar? Because I can't. |

Today is day 3 and I already feel a lot better than yesterday. I'm far from healthy, but I don't think I'm dying anymore. Also beginning to wonder
if it really was H1N1...

Not being able to see avatars is one of the early symptoms of swine flu.

Have we discussed this cheerleader who got the flu shot and then developed a horrible neurological disorder?? That wouldn't surprise me at all. All I have is a wicked head and throat cold that won't go away. It's been two weeks now. I'm taking precautionary "meds" to prevent getting the flu. Take care to all that have the flu! |

This is the most stubborn cough and sore throat I've ever had. I'm taking more meds than Paula Abdul right now, but nothing seems to help.

That was my main symptom -- the cough and sore throat wouldn't go away. The fever and body aches just lasted 2-3 days and weren't all that bad. I just
stayed home so I wouldn't infect anyone else.

Oh, and I can't see Wyl's avatar either. I assume it's from chronic masturbation, rather than H1N1.

Our local school district was all geared up to be a distribution point for the vaccine. Today, they announced that the plans have been scrapped because the
county cannot commit to the quantity needed. So now, I have to take the kids to a clinic. The weekend ones have had 4 hour waits for those wanting the
vaccine. I got in touch with a county health department office and they have walk in hours twice a week. So I've decided to send the kids late to school
later this week so they can get the vaccine. Then I'll have to do it again in a month for youngest (under 10) who will need a 2nd dose.

They were giving the H1N1 shot at the Lafayette Square Mall here in Indianapolis today. The line was all the way around the building and out into the parking
lot. I didn't go to it, I just saw it on the news.
Soon they're going to be giving it to all the IPS students who bring in a permission slip. In more personal news, some assclown came over to my house the other day and casually mentioned that he's had a sore throat for a while now. Yesterday I had a headache that I still have today, plus I feel achy and exhausted and I cough sometimes. Do I have the Porky Plague? |
