What kind of clearance did he have? Usually it isn't renewed for about 5-15 years, depending on what kinda clearance it is. Or unless someone is all "omg homeboy's a terrorist!" and then they'd investigate him, but even that would take awhile. They take forever to do, and for every clearance being investigated there's another fifty applications waiting to be researched.

Also, KUDOS to Eury (!!!) for her insightful comments regarding the nature of PTSD and the general pervasivness of both the under-reporting and inadequate treatment of mental disorders within the military. Also, the military is the biggest bureaucracy around ---> like a big pile of forms with a gun as a paperweight. Of course it would have taken much more than six months to identify, investigate and isolate a man with problems. DUH. Also, I am going to hug my long-suffering psych today.

Not particularly high, but you'd think that someone who talked about suicide bombings in the last year would of had their clearance yanked. Although the clearances are renewed for large numbers of years and they said that the posts had been going on for a year.
