 Why didn't Phil come out sooner? I don't recall the pitstop being that far away, and they still let Lena
continue to push hay bales?

The odds of finding a clue actually don't really go down much with later teams on these tasks. The first teams had 270 bales to choose from and 20 clues.
The later teams have fewer bales to choose from and fewer clues.
