How many of you road warriors stop at this side show attraction?

I bet Buc-ee's would kick Stuckey's ass.

I used to beg my father to stop there on road trips.
Pecan log rolls, and divinity especially. Also, no end of rabbit's foot keychains and pseudo indian beaded headbands. Didn't the roof used to be turquoise? |

When I was a kid, my brother and I would search for the blue roofs on long ass road trips.
You could see the ones in South Dakota and Nebraska for hours before actually arriving at them. |

I thought this thread was going to be about stuckatseven.
I wonder what that kid is up to these days. |

Helen, GA runs a close second to SotB for tacky tourist traps.

Ahh... Stuckey's! A fine establishment right up there with the likes of Howard Johnson's. Just look at this classic brochure. You have dad in the
back looking to his side confidently as he sips his morning cup of Joe and holds a box of some type of pecan product. Mom (as always) is squarely in the middle
with her glass of OJ and a delicious triangle of wholesome whitebread samwich with just a hint of processed meat and lettuce sticking out. Little Johnny is in
front holding his boxes of Pralines and a huge Pecan Log Roll... just in time to sit down and watch an episode of The Andy Griffith Show in their cheap motel
room located somewhere between North Carolina and Florida.

In the '60s and '70s it was almost impossible to travel any distance without spotting a bright orange roof and that Simple Simon weathervane. There
were close to 1,000 Howard Johnson's restaurants back then, each of them serving 28 flavors of ice cream and platefuls of fried clams.
Yeah, the menu did list other items--but to what purpose? As far as I was concerned at the time, HoJo's clam strips represented the peak of fried shellfish perfection. Diners in New England debate the validity of strips versus whole clams, bellies and all. Advocates of the latter point out--correctly--that whole clams are not only more delicate, but also present more pronounced flavors. Strips can be tougher, akin to overcooked calamari. On the other hand, Howard Johnson's strips carried enough of the sweet-briny flavor of clam to convince you of its seafood pedigree. And that chewy texture made a nice contrast to the rich, reassuring crunch of their crust. |

My nan used to take me to Stuckey's ... now it's all about Sheetz. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Emma, Hojo's had the orange and turquoise color scheme going on. Really ... if you're willing to be honest, the Hojo hotdogs on those buttery toast buns were pretty sweet. |

I remember going into that Howard Johnson's restaurant near Times Square when I was in high school on a field trip.
They didn't have Coke...only Pepsi. Hilarious to me at the time. |

This thread brings back so many memories for me. Every summer back in the arly 60's my parents would make vacation plans to drive down to Florida with
myself, my aunt Sally (who always wore a huge beehive, horn-rimmed glasses and a floral pattern blouse) and my uncle Drake who had a nasal disease and would
sit in front with my dad during the entire trip with his spit cup seated firmly in his lap.
I remember counting the South of the Border billboards along the way to our destination (all of them filled with politically incorrect Mexican-speak by their mascot, Pedro) and in between we'd stop at Stuckey's and Howard Johnson's for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The drive took 3 days but it was worth it. |
