Anyway, tonight, a couple of thoughts. First, the business about "anyone" could be an alien was too distracting and an obvious plot ploy, kept a truly good story line from developing. Also, I think this should have been done on a non-network channel. No innovation at all, even for a re-do. Oh well. I'm trying to find a replacement for Mad Men.

They sound cool, plus it would spare us from the whole "anyone could be a Visitor, just like anyone could be a Cylon" bullshit that I'm not interested in. At least the creators of Battlestar Galactica were smart enough to put a limit on the number of human-Cylons, so whenever a human was revealed as a Cylon, it was a big deal. I have a feeling with "V", it's going to get really old very quickly. Hundreds, thousands, or millions of people could be aliens! It's too much.

The only thing left is the ratings dive, the cancellation, the resurrection after the twenty remaining fans start mailing them peanuts, and the second cancellation. Flash Forward is exponentially better, and Flash Forward sucks too. Luckily I had no expectations about it anyway, so I'm cool. It looks like most of you will probably have a harder time accepting it.

All these other high-concept, serialized sci-fi shows keep popping up, hoping to be the next "Lost", and they keep failing. They're not paying attention to what makes "Lost" so great... all those great characters. "V" is such a technically well made show, but it lacks any compelling characters.

Exactly. there is no innovation in this show plot/theme-wise and therefore they need to have compelling character-development, and because they're moving so fast with the plot all we're experiencing is cliche storytelling without good characters.

They grounded everything in reality and created exceptionally strong characters. Your concept can be brilliant and high as the sky, but without amazing characters Sci-Fi just doesn't work.

I'm not typically a sci-fi person but I love Lost more than I could ever explain! I'm willing to put up with time-travel shenanigans if you give me an awesome story that could, in theory, be totally plausible. And this they have done. My love for V stems from my love for the cheesy, campy 80's version. I don't think they're right out failing with this new version. I just think networks want shows to get 20 million viewers right out of the gate and that's just ridiculous. They compromise a lot of quality trying to put as much as they can in a pilot or episode. As with Flash Forward, I will stick with this till the end.

Maybe it is becuase I have never seen the original mini-series but I am enjoying it. I can understand why they are going faster and covering more ground then they did back when. If you are going to redo a show, espically one that was only a mini-series, you don't want recover all the same ground that they did. You want to capture the elements that made that show work and apply them to a modern setting. I feel that if this was a straight foward remake, it would lose even more viewers. It is also impossible to judge these characters after 90 minutes of show. They are providing us with the basis for "really strong characters." I see the newsreporter being set up to be as a Baltar type character: he has to balance morally reprehensible actions with the possibilty of furthering his careear. The younger cast, although annoying, have the potential to be interesting - what will the fat one do when he learns the truth? What would Juliet's son do if the fat kid raped Lisa? All things that could happen but we have to give time to develop. Lost and Battlestar Galactica, and other great sci-fi shows all made corse corrections along the way to make themselves better. With the breaks in production and time frame that has been set out for the first season I bet this show will be doing exactly that.

Network television is all about formulas your argument could apply to almost every show on the air, every song, and every movie. Each is just a derivitive of something similar that the networks think people will watch. That doesn't mean that the final compination of elements in a formula is not enjoyable. I'm sure that many people on the board enjoy C₁₇H₂₁NO₄ But that does not mean that everytime they use it that they don't enjoy it. I also don't know what formula exists on TV in conjuniction with a backdoor invasion of Earth. The show has potential beyond the first 13 episoides to go places that other shows have not and I'm in interested in seeing how it gets there.

It's been done, and some previous issues were arguably better. "You can't trust anybody because the aliens have assumed human form and infiltrated the highest levels of government and society" was done better by The Invaders. If this show comes up with a facial tic or physical deformity that gives away the lizards, that'll be straight out of The Invaders, too. (The Aliens couldn't make their pinkies look normal or summat.) If the aliens have to "regenerate" in some way to maintain human form, or risk dying, melting down, catching fire, etc., that's also right out of The Invaders. In general, the entire "infiltrating us" angle is standard-issue-50's-60's-SciFi-as-allegory-for-the-Commies-taking-over, e.g., Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The lizards are copied directly from the original V. The wrecking ball is ripped off from The Arrival. Somebody pointed out a The 4400 reference.
