D.ude fibbed to her the other day and she completely dismissed his case.
That case was great. I also love that she still uses the word 'fib'.

I wish she's stop threatening to dismiss cases and then not do it, especially when people interrupt or will not shut up and try to talk over her. She
really should get Byrd to go over to the table and have him stare down whoever won't shut the fuck up.
Single mother who owed old b/f money she said was a gift, but paid him $1000 cash was so fucking annoying, wouldn't shut her trap and just answer the question - JJ needs to sick Byrd on these people. |

I'm pretty sure I've seen one or two episodes where she dismissed a person's case because they didn't shut up.
The GET UNSHOCKED episode was unbelievable. I haven't seen a litigant (in this case, the defendant) that hateful since the plaintiff who wanted to sue the defendant for damage to her vehicle. Turns out the plaintiff's son and the defendant's daughter both went joyriding in a car (that the plaintiff left unlocked on the property with the keys inside), got into an accident and the plaintiff's son lived while the defendant's daughter died. Look up JUDGE JUDY CASE 10 on YOUTUBE. |

That episode had to be the worst ever on the show, Papa. I still cannot believe the stupidity of that woman and how callous she was, even at the end. What a
despicable piece of crap.

I wonder how much the "litigants" really do get paid for their appearances. I read somewhere years ago that they all got paid $5,000.00, in addition
to free airfare, and put up at a nice hotel with all the room service and booze they could drink. But, whatever the loser's judgement was, was taken out of
the $5,000 payment, and the winner got to keep theirs.
That would explain a lot. |

Ew, I remember that one, but I wish I didn't.

I watched one on Youtube "Can you believe I get paid for this?" or something....where the St. Patricks Day guys got drunk and made funny faces at a
chick - and didn't realize her fiance was in the car

I remember hearing/reading a long time ago that they don't get paid to appear, but the show will pay the judgement, and of course fly them out to LA and
put them in a hotel.

Isnt the max amount awarded 5K? I thought they give the winner their winnings out of the 5K and then split the difference between the two parties.
So if the verdict is 3K for the plaintiff, the plaintiff gets 4K (3K plus half of the remaining 2K) and the defendant gets 1K |

The max depends on the jurisdiction they reside in. Most have a cap of $5 grand, but I've seen some cases where the cap is 3 grand. What would be the point
of the loser getting the difference, they're supposed to 'suffer', not rewarded. I'm gonna go google it because I'm bored as shit.

The point is that the loser bothers to show up and doesn't have to pay a judgement. The possibility of walking away with cash in their pocket is enticing.

Exactly. And that's the bait so that they are outed in front of all of America that bothers to watch.

This show would be so much better (not that it isn't already great) if Judge Judy had more power than she does. Like custody stuff, etc. Then she could
really lay the smack down.
Most of the episodes about a simple loan do suck though! Sorry Judy! |

One thing i have wondered is about the difference between the kind of courts of the different judge shows. For example Judge Hatchett used to give people
judgments of 8,000 , 10,000 etc. Judge Joe Brown and Judge Mathis will award people money that they ARENT suing for. They usually call it punitive damages and
if the defendant or plaintiff pisses them off theyll award the other litigant more money than what they are suing for. Judge Joe Brown often uses it as a way
to threatent and intimidate. One recent case I saw the person asked him a question and his response was "im just sitting here thinking about how much in
punitive damgages im going to stick you with."

I've seen JJ get pissed and abruptly award one party the entire 5k before, but I don't think she ups the original amount. She will however taunt a dumbass and tell them that they should have asked for more, and she also randomly gives money for harassment. Like the loopy bitch today who had to give up $100 of her judgement for going to the guy's apartment and taking back the clothes she'd given him. YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO DO THAT MADAM otoh Judge Milian seems to be bound only by the statutory maximum in the litigants' home state. I dunno. |

I think it's the show's discretion on where to cap the awards. Judge Judy and People's Court stick with the Small Claims Court general rule of
$5,000 as a maximum suit, whereas they could award more if they wanted to--there's nothing to prevent them from doing so since it's not a legal court.
The litigants sign waivers that they are dropping their suits in the real court system and the shows act as "mediators" or "arbitrators"
but run it like a real courtroom. The rulings are binding because of the waivers that the litigants sign. That's how I understand it. The other court shows
that go over the limit imposed by Small Claims court are doing so because...they can. That's my guess.
