Coach didn't really start to get excessive airtime until after the merge. I do think/hope Russell's an anomaly though as far as the editing goes; they went overboard with him possibly to justify his spot on S20 or whatever and judging from the comments on Probst's blog it rubbed a lot of viewers the wrong way so hopefully they steer clear of that in the future.
Anyway, according to this article, Survivor is one of four shows in the running for the post-Super Bowl slot next year.
I think that it is the other way around. The editing team started working on S19 before filming of S20 started. They went overboard on Russell because he is a passionate player and from a gameplay point of view he dominates the season and he has become similar to a football quarterback in that he is controlling the direction of the game. Russell is like All Stars Boston Rob times three. SEG had planned that S20 would be a second All Stars season for quite some time (as evidenced with Hatch leaking that he was approached about returning while Tocantins was still airing). It wouldn't surprise me if SEG's decision on the Heroes vs. Villains theme for S20 was highly influenced by what Russell did on S19. I know that Todd's enthusiasm for the game was an influence for SEG to do the Fans vs. Favorites theme. Casting Russell for S20 more than makes up for Richard not being able to appear on S20. Rich would be completely overshadowed by Russell anyway because Rich is too old school survivor.
I hope that the post-Super Bowl spot is not given to Survivor for 2 reasons. First, I can't stand the possibility of having to wait till all hours of the morning for the show to start. At least with TAR, the show will start at a reasonable hour even with over time. Secondly, a usual starting date for S20 eliminates the possibility that there will be a hiatus for March Madness because the cast size is too large. The breaks without a new regular episode during Panama/EI and Tocantins felt like they went on forever.
