But then my best friend from high school talked me into letting him play his videotapes for me, and I was surprised to discover that I did like it. What I could never figure out, though, was why the American public seemed to dislike the only contestants who seemed to have half a brain. Maybe it's just because I missed out on the whole phenomenon, but the instant the premise was fully explained to me, I was sort of like: "Oh. So it's basically just the biggest majority gets to run the show until the end? That doesn't sound very complex." I think that on some fundamental level, by missing the entire watercooler-chat-magazine-article-faddish-public-phenomenon aspect of the show (I was living in a tent, not a cave, but it came to the same thing), I also managed to find myself completely out of touch with the entire cultural zeitgeist.
