A real player wouldn't NEED a HII to last in the game.

I can't wait for next season, just because we know those fuckers well enough to really hate on them.
No holding back next season. I'd hate more this season, but I don't give a shit about this dull, poorly-edited cast. I miss people like Lex, Denise, and Coach, who gave so much fodder that you could never run out of reasons to hate them. |

Russell? A strategic player? Let's examine his strategy so far:
Move 1: Within the first 5 minutes of the game, making final 2 alliances with 4/5 of the girls on the tribe, who were in the middle of bonding by thatching together palm fronds when he pulled them aside. Made 2 enemies right off the bat because he was "playing so hard". Move 2: Votes off one of the strongest challenge performers, Marissa, because she questioned his trust after seeing him running around camp making alliances with everybody. We can't say for sure if this had something to do with them losing the next 20 challenges, but it probably didn't help their chances any. Move 3: Finds the HII without any clues. It was clever of him to think to look for it, but come on, it was in the hollow part of the biggest tree in camp. Didn't take a genius to find it. Move 4: After losing their second challenge, witnessing Ben getting thrown out for his hot headed behavior, he decides to vote Betsy off for the same reasons as Marissa, and because she is questionable in the challenges. When several members of his tribe, including 2 people in his main alliance, express an interest in voting off Ben for being too out of control in challenges, making racist comments about Yasmin, and just being an all around jerk, he ignores it and votes Betsy off anyway, even though she most likely wouldn't be able to get enough votes to boot him anyway, and had never expressed an interest to. Move 5: Even after Ben loses them another challenge because he can't focus his energy, he targets Ashley, one of his strongest allies, instead. He is finally convinced to vote out Ben, making him seem like a little less of a pig. Move 6: He votes out Ashley, who had complete trust in him, over Liz who caught on to his game, and Jaison, who at this point was talking about wanting to quit every 3 minutes. I'll cut him a little slack on on this, because of the rain factor. Move 7: Makes a spur of the moment final 2 alliance with Laura. Russell has been one of the worst judges of character I've ever seen. He thinks that because she's a Christian and a grandmother that she'll be a pushover and do whatever he says. Turns out that's the furthest thing from the truth. This completely unnecessary decision comes back to bite him at the merge. Move 7: Votes out Liz, which turned out to be a lucky move because the merge happened at 12, and had Liz gone to the merge she would have been a huge threat to him, both physically and strategically. Had the merge not happened at 12, though, he would have been in hot water, because Jaison at this point was single handedly losing Foa Foa challenges. Move 8: The tribes merge, first thing he does is go to Laura to make good on their alliance. He shows her the idol, and demands that she vote out a Galu first. When she says no, he gets pissed at her and marches off to show the idol to the rest of the tribe to try and get her voted off, including her best friend Monica, gaining him 3 more enemies in the game (the Galu girls minus Shambo). Turning on Laura and aligning with Shambo was probably his stupidest move. Yes, Shambo was maybe the one most eager to flip right away, but Shambo is only one vote. Had he worked Laura and the other Galu girls some more (like Natalie did), he could have voted off Shambo at the first TC, which would cause Erik, John, and Dave to turn against the Galu girls, causing the entire tribe to implode. Instead he opts to out himself as the most desperate player in the game by trying to make a final 2 alliance with each of them. Did he not think they might tell each other? Move 9: Decides he doesn't trust Natalie, his closest ally who he's been with since day 1, enough to orchestrate Erik's vote out, so he plays his idol even though he had zero votes for him. Even if Erik didn't get voted out, had he been paying attention to what was going on he would have known that either Jaison or Monica were going to be the targets for the vote. Move 10: Finds the second HII while half the tribe is gone. He finds it under the bridge, which is one of the few landmarks on the beach. Again, clever, but not as brilliant as everyone makes it out to be. If this were a season where the HII was buried, or even on Exile Island, he would be gone by now. Hell, he probably would have been gone a while ago. In short, Russell is playing the hardest, but he's also playing the stupidest. He's also been the worst judge of character Survivor has had in years. He makes alliances with people in blazing speed because he thinks they'll all kowtow to him, and most of them don't. He's lost a lot of potential allies because he doesn't think before he acts, and has put himself in a position where he needs to win immunity or keep finding HIIs to stay in the game. He's made it this far because Jaison and Mick are the strategically brain dead, Natalie is dragging him to the finals because she recognizes that he has the social graces of a tapeworm (which is probably why she hasn't ditched him and aligned with the Galu girls), and the producers are desperate for HII blindsides, so they are hiding them in the most obvious places. Almost every person who has exited the game has expressed a disdain for him because of one reason or another. If he wins, he'll be a worse winner than Bob in my mind. |

Archibald C wrote:Can you grasp that Russell's skepticism had nothing to do with Natalie and everything to do with giving credit to his competitors for playing a better game than they were playing? Do you understand that Russell couldn't trust anything coming out of Galu after it became clear to him that Laura and Erik appeared to be on the same side? Do you realize that Russell had never told Erik about his idol, and was therefore suspicious that Erik somehow knew about it? Can you appreciate the fact that Russell had to play his idol once he had burned it trying to turn a 4 - 8 disadvantage around? One final thing: Please tell us exactly what you think would have happened to Foa Foa at the merge if Russell had done nothing more than to go around schmoozing Galu and kissing their butts, just like the other 3 Foa Foans. |

Everything Archibald says is correct. Making alliances with everything that moves =/= good strategy.
