The good contestants may have been as good or better than many on Idol, but there were some tone deaf bottom-feeders, as well. It's not like they were all
great on this show, either...

They took bigger risks with the singers on the show, and got REAL rockers. That was nice; but the show was cheese and looked like it was filmed in some corny
lizard lounge.

You are right, cg. The show had a big cheese factor. ESPECIALLY that fake poser bitch host Brooke. Man, I hated her, and her contrived faux rocker get-ups.
But you're also right that the show actually had on some real rockers. Amidst the cheese, there was a sense of unpredictability that rock should have, and Idol NEVER has. I think nostagia may be rosing up my memory of the show, but I still say it had a quality that is hard to find on other reality tv shows. I do wish it were on again. With a new, truly cool host, and judges that are hard-core rock people, but focused enough to give trenchant critiques. Keep the house band, toss the rest. |

So we didn't have a single American in the F4?
That's Un-American and I'm not going to stand for it! |

I liked this show because they sang INXS songs every week before the boot.

True. But there's got to be some of those types that audition for Idol. I wonder if it's casting or editing that makes Idol edge-free.

Ryan Star has the theme song to lie to me. In addition to touring with David Cook he toured with Collective Soul for about 2 months. He will be opening for rob
thomas for a few shows and the script for a show. He was recently interviewed on cnn because of his web site www.breathe4jobs.com

But she has moved towards mainstream pop. Suzie is also a judge on a kids singing competition here on YTV in Canada. I think that having a multi national group of singers was a part of the draw for me. The world wide vote allowed us to weigh in as well. And rightfully so with INXS as an Australian band with international appeal. We had UK, Canada, US, Iceland, South Africa, Australia. Was there anywhere else? And the only time I really felt the cheese was during the judging, coming from the pillow pit. Otherwise, I liked the feel and look of the show. Better than the schmaltzy profile clips and commercials as well as the projectile neon vomit used in American Idol. |

They also really worked the drama in the "at-home" scenes. Then these rock stars, most of whom had done plenty of drama mongering themselves, lecture
the contestants?

Jordis' "Imagine" is one of my all time favorites. She did an amazing job. I agree this show needs to come back.

Her Imagine was good, same with Knocking on Heaven's door (almost as good as Dana's...) but Man Who Sold the World will be on her tombstone.

Whereas the second season, god, seemed like those @***$ were far too busy goofin' around & oogling every passing pair of tits in a push-up bra to actually bother paying attention to whatever was happening on stage so their "judgment" was usually out of left field. It just seemed like they were going through the motions the first couple weeks and already had a favorite picked out so when it came time for their "advice"? Bah, they wasted what little brain power they had (those few brain cells that weren't completely pickled or stoned to death) trying to think up something clever and funny to say instead of giving real advice. Dave N., on the other hand, did a good job for both seasons and was fairly consistent when critiquing the contestants but Tommy & company's goofing around would occasionally get him sidetracked too. But.. even with all that going against it.. it was still a great show because it was fascinating to listen to all the different styles of the artists. And, every now and then, a contestant would come up with a interesting new twist on some creaky ol' classic. Like Dilana's rendition of "Ring of Fire", or Marty's "Hit Me Baby One More Time". And that is what made it great: all the different styles. It wasn't the same contest, week-after-week, of who could belt out a power-ballad the best. I don't think it'll get brought back, though. I heard the same rumor that StatelyWayneManor heard: that the producers felt it was way too expensive to produce because of licensing or royalties. |

That's too bad. Because in fact, a big part of what made this show better than other was the actual MUSIC. By lots of cool bands and cool artists. Makes
sense it was expensive.
I agree that the judging really self-destructed the second year. It was SO annoying. |

I always have Suzie's album on my ipod and it's great all round. I hear her songs in all sorts of places so I know she's doing well and she does
deserve it because those songs of hers are awesome and she's amazing.
I managed to find a copy of the album of the first season of Rock Star INXS just last week with everyone contributing at least one song. (Even Dana! I have zero intention of ever listening to anything by Dilana, JD (who's probably living in his car again) or Lukas. I just checked... JD really is living out of his car! http://undercover.com.au/News-Story.aspx?id=7641

Y'all got me thinking about S1, so I went back into the archives here and read literally 259 pages of the original S1 thread. God I loved that show. I
still have Marty Casey's "Trees" on my mp3 player, and Suzie's "I Can't Make You Love Me". The show started out as a pretty
great experiment, until it became clear about two thirds of the way through that JD had been pre-chosen, and the show became about his 4 month long audition.
The second run of it sucked hard, because they weren't replacing a member of an established band but creating another one, with 4 old generation
internationally recognized rockers, and trying to inject someone absolutely inexperienced and half their ages. Hell, Tommy Lee's had hangovers older than
the little shit they ended up with.
I would love to think this would be a perfect format to find another lead for Aerosmith, but I don't want to condemn Aerosmith to jumping the shark quite yet. |

cginspace wrote:I loved that, especially during RS: INXS when it was on Vh-1(?) and they showed much more of the house stuff. The S1 contestants were awesome when they were partying at the house. I bought the DVD that season to see the extra scenes of the cake fight on JD's birthday and JD going bare-assed into his cake and the group shower. Good times. They need to not only bring this back, but they need to put it on a network where they can show more of the shenanigans going on at the house during their downtime. The major 3 networks won't allow risque stuff to be shown. Vh-1 should do it again and get back to the 3-nights a week airings: I think they did the performance show, then the results the next night and on Sunday nights they aired a 30-min episode of the behind the scenes/house stuff. The format for the first season was the best. |
