Schools can't compel students to say the Pledge of Allegiance. I'm pretty sure there was a SCOTUS case on this issue back in the 1940s, so that's a
non-issue.
I thought we were talking about how stupid the kid was for tying his refusal to recite the pledge to gay rights. |

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag was written by a socialist as advertising copy for a flag manufacturer. It's really quite a radical statement.
"equality and justice for all" The "under God" part was stuck in later. maybe the 1950s.
I am much more disturbed by the people who fly ripped, torn, and faded flags, fly it at night without lights on it, or hang in the wrong way around when displaying it vertically. The unthinking and selfish with no thought about what the meaning is bother me far more. I spend some time around World War II veterans and I've seen the flag and the anthem reflected in their eyes, especially the ones with reason to be cynical who instead are placing flags on the graves of the fallen. |
