So now John believes he's friends with everyone. Hell, he might be delusional enough to think he can use that to dictate the rest of the game. More realistically, he just knows having allies on both sides of the divide is likely to help him out. It won't work because Russell's a better, more backstabbing player than he realizes. But in his mind, he much preferred heading into the unknown as the top dog to taking a 50/50 chance that he'd pick his side and lose out in the random draw (or worse yet, grant himself a 10th place finish because the odds really didn't work out).
