Jack Cust my ass. Another steroided Oakland ballplayer who can draw walks and has pop but can't field worth a lick.

I know who Mauer is. I even voted for him for the AS game. There is even digital proof of it.
On the other hand, no fucking clue who Jack Cust is. |

Yup. Although he is built better for CBP than Citi and grew up closer to Philly anyway.

Mauer will get his 20M and stay home. I was perusing through a couple Boston forums last night and reading Mauer discussions, which got pretty heated between optimists trying to come up with scenarios to get Mauer to Boston (essentially, give MIN the entire team this offseason) and fatalists resigned to the fact that the Yankees will simply outbid the Sox and there's nothing that can be done about it. Few of them were level-headed enough to point out that Mauer will never be a FA. He will likely have a new contract, or at least an extension, by the time he reports to spring training. I don't even think it'll be $20M either; he deserves more, but don't be surprised if it's 17 or 18 for eight or nine years. Joe Mauer does not have dollar signs instead of pupils; he is playing for the team he grew up rooting for and his only condition for staying is that they commit to building a winning club around him. They'll probably work out a deal with him that will set aside money for Morneau too...the more money Mauer gets, the less will be available for Morneau and the more likely the Twins will be to trade Morneau (and hopefully get more than they got for Santana). Mauer's agent is Ron Shapiro, the guy who represented Puckett and Ripken. You know, the nice quiet guys who, if not the greatest of their era, were certainly the most beloved, and played their entire careers with one team. And that's Joe Mauer to a tee. He is the last player to wear #7 for Minnesota, and Minnesota will be the only team listed on his plaque. My favorite player is now the league's Most Valuable. I may very well get to say that a few more times, but I will never take it for granted. |

The days of the one man one team career a la Ripken, etc may be all be but gone. Jeter/Rivera/etc. might be the last ones of that stature but if there is any
young player who is most likely to be a one teamer, it's Mauer. They can still pay him close to 20 if not now then down the road, 15+ for Morneau and 65+
for the rest of the team.

If Zimm leaves so go the Nats 5 years later.

Objectively speaking, it might be better for the league if the Nats were to fold.
Having said that, I'd rather sacrifice the Orioles and one of the Florida teams. |

I still think the tide is turning with Strasburg and then this kid in next year's draft.

Not everyone needs outrageously gaudy sums of money to be happy playing baseball. For some guys, its all about location. |

for the record i think mauer stays a twin for life. he doesnt seem like the type to like the big city. yeah, if the Twins pay him somewhere in the 20M range annually for 5-6 yrs he might consider staying. when the Yankees offer him like 180M, it won't matter if he likes the big city or not. Not everyone needs outrageously gaudy sums of money to be happy playing baseball. For some guys, its all about location. remember when CC didn't want to come to NY
cause he wanted to stay out west since he grew up in california? how did that work out?

You've been in NY too long. The Yankees could offer him a billion dollars and he'd turn it down because a) he has the "nice-guy" agent, b)
he's playing for his hometown team, c) the Twins are now in a position to both make him rich and keep a winning team built around him. And none of this
matters because the Yankees will never get the chance to offer him anything; he will have a contract by March at the latest. In fact the latest rumor is
they're on pace to sew it up by Christmas.
