- S4: Boston Rob (first voted out of the merge)
- S9 Rory (First voted out of the merge, if you believe the chart that says he's a villain that is, but as a
casual viewer that season before I even heard of edgic I ended up liking Rory after the swap and was disappointed to
see him go, plus he never got another N after episode #3).
- S17: Randy & Corinne (2nd and 3rd voted out of the merge)
So history shows us that villains on the underdog tribe that pulls off a win in the end don't last long in the merge.
But there's one big thing different from S4, S9, and S17 compared to this season in the merge. In those 3 previous season the underdog tribe was pagonged off for several episodes, leaving only only one (S9 & S17) or two (S4) people from that tribe left by the time they finally turned the tables on the dominant tribe. This season the underdog tribe, Foa Foa, managed to turn things around from day 1 of the merge, so none of them was voted out. That's never happened for an underdog tribe that contained a villain in the merge, so maybe these aren't entirely fair comparisons.
How many seasons have had an underdog tribe that won the game where the minority/underdog tribe didn't contain a villain at merge time? Just three, S11, S13, and S18. In S11 the minority was picked off one after another until the F6 (with the exception of the Jamie boot in the middle) where only Danni was left standing among the underdog tribe. S13 and S18 had the underdog tribe enter the merge down in numbers, only to turn the tables on the majority tribe right away, in both seasons every single one of the underdog tribe's members who made the merge made the F4 as well.
Russell has survived three merge episodes as part of the underdog tribe at the time of the merge, breaking the records of the other 4 villains. Russell's tribe also took control of the game right away in the merge (based on who actually went home). Guess Russell's an unusual edit in more ways then his extreme visibility, no underdog tribe has merged with a villain before only to take control of the game right away.
What that means for Russell and Foa Foa, well you can think of your own reasons, though I think part of why a villain from the underdog tribe is making it farther then one has ever made it before is because Russell is just giving them great villain footage that's entertaining to show. I also don't think this one of a kind situation/edit is because Russell loses in the F2/F3, but I am a Russell supporter.
