I wonder why they've moved towards having more recruits, when it was the earlier applicant-filled seasons that got better ratings.

You're using the incorrect logic. Its more likely that its a coincidence that the earlier seasons with the better ratings had more applicants. If next season was 100% applicants, there still would be the small percentage decrease in viewership that happens every season with nearly every TV show.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good opinion. Guatemala and Gabon were the only post All-Star season that had higher finale viewerships than premiers. China had a major ratings pop over previous seasons, which could have been due to the interest in its location or due to other causes. The biggest ratings disaster in terms of declining ratings through the season and a crash to the reunion show, was the virtually all recruited Fiji and the farce "Fans" vs Faves in Micronesia.

The slip in ratings is normal for any show that has been around for as many seasons as Survivor. You need a life. That's probably why they won't cast you on the show.

Simply false numerous game shows and sports programming that has been around longer than Survivor has held ratings. Burnett himself thinks Survivor has no reason that its ratings should decline off the general traend down due to dispersion (there are now hundreds of channels) and alternatives to TV. The tide is flowing out on network broadcast TV and so Survivor's benchmark should be against that trend. Survivor is not a scripted show and therefore is not presumed to run a ratings arch like Friends.

When a casual fan turns on the TV and thinks they're tuned into MTV they move on. When fans can no longer identify with the people on the show they stop watching. When the cast is full of people from LA they have no hometown hero to pull for (like watching the NBA finals between two teams with limited appeal nationally). Cirie will get you more viewers than another lame LA taco stand chick. You can have your opinion, mine is otherwise.
