Giants-Jets Super Bowl?

At this very moment, someone in this sports-crazy town is writing the following sentence: "This is THE year."

As in: "This is the year the Jets and Giants finally meet in the Subway Super Bowl, even if they have to fly to South Florida to do it.''

You may even have read it already. No doubt, someone on sports-talk radio already has said it, or is saying it right now.

Well, I am not that someone. You will not read that here.

The Jets and Giants may well deliver on the promise of their excellent starts, but I wouldn't go booking that flight to Miami Beach just yet.

Four-and-oh is four-and-oh, no doubt, and - as the oft-quoted but rarely understood Bill Parcells liked to say - you are what your record says you are. The Jets and Giants, both winners of important games Sunday, are good football teams, and this may well turn out to be a special year in a town in which all too often, the football season ends before the baseball season does.

But anyone who would predict what will occur at the end of an NFL season based on its first two weeks is crazy. And not just crazy, but forgetful. And quite possibly uninformed.

It was barely 10 months ago when the same kind of predictions were being made based on a lot more solid evidence. Last Nov. 23, it would have been perfectly reasonable to make the case that New York was the home of the two best teams in professional football.

On that day, the Giants moved to 10-1 by steamrolling the Arizona Cardinals, 37-29, and the Jets went to 8-3 by shocking the unbeaten Tennessee Titans, 34-13. Coming on the heels of a game in which the Jets added yet another frown line to Bill Belichick's brow by beating the Patriots in Foxborough, it certainly seemed as if very little stood in the way of a trip to Tampa for both teams.

So what happened? Two unforeseen circumstances that conspired to smash those dreams to bits.

Someone shot Plaxico Burress in the leg in a Manhattan nightclub. (OK, it was Burress.) Then Brett Favre's right shoulder inexplicably turned 60 years old.

As a result, Nov. 23 turned out to be the last good day of the New York football season. From that day on, the Giants and Jets combined to go 3-8.

Despite earning the NFC's No. 1 seed with their 12-4 record, the Giants failed to win a playoff game. They were forced to "console'' themselves with the dubious satisfaction of watching four teams they already had beaten play each other in the championship round.

The Jets, losers of four of their last five, didn't get to the playoffs at all. Their consolation was having routed the eventual NFC champion Cardinals, 56-35, in Week 4.

Now go back two years, to December 2007, when the Giants - having been embarrassed by the Redskins, 22-10, in Week 15 - were on the verge of sending coach Tom Coughlin off with a bagful of lovely parting gifts autographed by Ray Handley.

Six weeks later, they were holding a parade on Broadway to celebrate an incredible upset victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, and Coughlin was being hailed as a genius.

The point is, there is no more difficult season to project than an NFL season. Early success is intoxicating - and often deceiving. Injuries, off-the-field missteps and random bounces can take the most carefully laid plans and reduce them to rubble.

The Jets and Giants already have taken two preseason "truisms" and proven them false.

The first is that you can't beat New England with a rookie coach and a rookie quarterback. So far, Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez are performing as if they've been around for years.

The second is that the Giants would never be able to throw the football effectively, having lined up no adequate replacements for the discarded Burress and Amani Toomer.

I believe Mario Manningham and Steve Smith - who had 20 catches and nearly 300 yards between them against Dallas - and Derek Hagan, who made one huge third-down catch on the winning drive, would dispute that statement.

Yet, in an earlier era, minus the replay rule and the decadence of a 180-foot-wide video screen, a game-turning second-quarter interception would have gone down as simply an incomplete pass, because there's no way the naked eye would have caught the football bouncing up off Jason Witten's heel into the hands of Kenny Phillips.

Absolutely random, improbable, impossible to foresee and foolish to predict.

Sort of like looking at four football games in September and seeing all the way into February.
