It WAS about her voice. No one believed for a SECOND that she could sing well and the audience can be seen rolling their eyes before she began the audition. As soon as she belted out I Dreamed a Dream, she had the audience screaming in delight because she DOES have such a marvelous voice, because she CAN sing well, and she DOES have talent.
Maybe you should check out the 80 million views youtube video. People are commenting about her voice all the time. The reviews on her album even say that the songs don't do her voice justice.

Pity or condescension doesn't always sell records. I don't think her fragile mental health sells records, that's the type of thing which might
deter sales. I think her music is a very comfortable type of music which can get someone who may not care about buying a lot of other music. It's the same
as the standards albums Rod Stewart used to sell big numbers in. Linda Rondstadt also sold a lot of that stuff as her years of recording success were winding
down. Michael Buble is another who fits into this genre.
There also aren't a lot of the easy listening type of artists to get attention now. One had to be imported. I think, if Kate Smith were around today, she'd probably have a similar type of career.

Susan Boyle is bought by people who (a) need gifts for Granny, (b) are too old to realize that you can download music for free, and (c) run aromatherapy shops
and need something playing in the background that the clientele will find inoffensive.

Susan Boyle has a very nice voice and she sings very well. I agree that part of the reason for Susan-mania is that, because she is homely, nobody was
expecting her to sing well when they first saw her, so her talent came as a shock. Which is really kind of stupid, really... since when does physical beauty
have anything to do with musical ability? But there it is.
She does not seem to be handling fame at all well and I don't really expect this to last very long. I am not sure she can take it. While she has a lovely voice, I don't know that it's unusually so, and I don't know if her sophomore album will do as well when the hype dies down. This year's top 2 has been kind of a bust as far as I'm concerned. I am sorry to hear that Kris is selling so poorly; I suspect these would be perfectly acceptable numbers for a runner-up, but as the winner, he's got to be horribly disappointed, and I can just hear the gears creaking in the 19E exec's heads to make sure they get exactly the winner they want for 2010, because Kris seems to be what happens when the audience rebels against TPTB. So we can probably turn spot-the-manipulation into a drinking game this year. As for Adam - I still think he's a breathtakingly gifted singer, but he also seems to be a breathtakingly aggressive drama queen and appears to pull publicity stunts left and right to raise attention to himself as if he does not believe his talent alone will get it done. He seems to be trying very much too hard to be different and edgy, and he's looking kind of stupid. Too bad. Talented kid. Maybe once he's established he'll feel secure enough to stop acting like a sideshow and start trying to be an artist, I don't know.

I gave up about half-way through Wild Horses because the performance was so lifeless and the voice typical of what I've heard a gazillion times in Pops Orchestras shows. If you're going to stand like a poker throughout your performance then you better have extraordinary pipes and delivery. What SuBo brought to her slow tempo numbers was nothing compared to any number of AI divas - such as Melinda Dolittle, Mandisa, Syesha Mercado - heck, even Paris Bennet. She has talent but it would never have been enough for a career or a recording contract without the reality show and her back story of a frumpy, virginal spinster. I think her album (as well as Boccellis') are for people who strictly want something playing in the background because after a coupe listens, you'd have to be either brain dead or bored out of your mind. |

Susan became a sensation because she came out looking and acting like she'd be terrible and turned out to be good. Is she the best singer in the world?
Hell no. The expectations were terribly low and when she sounded good, they acted like she was Mariah or something. Obviously the judges knew she was gonna be
good and the whole thing was a big fucking set up. The eye-rolling were likely random shots that weren't even related to Susan's audition. They did the
same thing to the bumfuck hick who won AGT this year. His audition was filmed before Susan-mania and Simon tried the same thing with him, cutting and pasting
people eye-rolling and laughing, and that miserably failed in him getting any sort of internet buzz. He still won but he ended up getting like 2% of the hits
Susan got and the show promoted him as "A HUGE INTERNET STAR!"

I watched that first video at a very delayed pace and was like, umm what? This is who people are all hyped up about, bitch please. She does nothing for me. She's terribly ordinary and again if she wasn't ugly no one would care. Her voice is great I suppose but nothing phenomenal or never been heard before. Most of the big belters on Idol shows (like the aforementioned) kick the fucking crap out of SuBo and are a hell of a lot more interesting while doing it. This bitch gets to sell 600K and Melinda probably works as a janitor on the Idolatry set or something, which is lame considering. Easy listening can only take you so far if you don't have an ounce of anything special, which she doesn't. There's a reason Michael, Andrea and the like will continue to sell albums and Boyle's 2nd album won't go anywhere, hell it remains to be seen if her album will even have legs. Her novelty will wear off and then what? She's yawn worthy and I hope to see her 15 minutes finish soon. |

I wonder if BGT had its contestants perform week after week for 12-14 rounds if some of the bloom would have worn off Susan Boyle as it did on Melinda
Doolittle during her run on Idol? Melinda's story was inspiring, but not as pathetic as Susan's as Melinda was portrayed as a professional background
singer who decided to step outfront. After a while, the gimmick wore off--people took her professionalism for granted, got tired of her surprised look and
also realized that while a superb vocalist, did not have much stage presence and seemed abashed when singing certain types of songs, such as rock. On BGT,
there was already enough of a backlash against Susan Boyle that she lost to a dance troupe, and that was after just 3 performances! But then she had a
breakdown and it reinforced the poor pitiful Susan Boyle image for most of the people who were drawn to her.
Now Susan Boyle has released a quickie CD. Other than the vocals, I'm sure she had little to contribute to the music, as the rest was handled by Simon Cowell and his staff, aiming for the lowest common denominator for the type of audience likely to buy into Susan Boyle. It will be interesting if she goes on tour if she's able to handle it. As for Melinda, she did play a one week stand at Feinstein's, an upscale cabaret room on Park Avenue in NYC and got a good notice from the New York Times. Perhaps she has a future in the standards world? |
