What songs will make the top 50? What songs should make the top 50? And what was the best song of the sixties?
I'll come back to finish my list tomorrow. Stay tuned. :) |

UrbanSprawl wrote:I Say a Little Prayer was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Dionne Warwick in 1967. The Aretha Franklin version was a cover -- Dionne made it famous. The Lawrence Welk sanitized it for America's racists here: http://www.youtube.com/wa...=GTD8Ut5FgEM Ouch. |

Aretha's version trumps it. Just like her cover of Shoop Shoop trumps Betty's version.

Louie Louie should be up there.
Light My Fire, although Break On Through is my personal favorite. More Beatles. Lots and lots of Beatles. My Generation is probably top 10. I'll go with Like A Rolling Stone as #1. Satisfaction will be up there, but I doubt Urban will make it #1. |

FAIL. David Bowie's Space Oddity charted in the 70's.

Following recording of a fresh version, the single was rush-released on 11 July 1969 to coincide with the Apollo 11 moon landings. In the UK, it was used in conjunction with the BBC's coverage of the landing, and also promoted via advertisements for the Stylophone, played by Bowie on the record. This exposure finally gave Bowie a hit, reaching #5 in the chart. |

If you're a Brit, it charted in 1969. Is this the "Top British Songs of the 60's" thread?
In the US, it took Space Oddity until 1972 to become a "hit" on mainstream Top 40 and Rock stations. Look at the Billboard Top 100 list for 1973. You'll find Space Oddity at #15. You won't find it in Billboard's 1969 list. Sorry, but you just won't. |
