Just for Best Actress? I'd say Gabourey Sidibe is just as certain as Mulligan is. Precious is too big to ignore. And of course Mo'nique is a lock in
supporting actress.

Word is, many who do not know how the actress is in real life said it "isn't acting." Her acting is so good, in fact, that many assume she was
just being herself. So word is she is a good bet but not a certainty. Tongues are wagging, as they should, about Mulligan.

They are now talking a pretty good bet for Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart. Sounds kind of interesting, with Bridges and... uh... Colin Farrell as country
crooners... and Maggie Gyllenhall as the love interest of Bridges?

I had no clue that Colin Farrell was in Crazy Heart after watching the trailer. Interesting. I'm not TOTALLY sold on Jeff Bridges' chances as of right
now because like... who is actually anticipating the film? Seems like a good bet but I'd put my money on Freeman and Firth before him.

Firth is a given. What little I heard of Freeman's accent sounds absolutely HORRENDOUS in the ads for Invictus... not that it would stop people form giving
him a Hollywood tongue bath.

The Oscar season has "started" today with the Independent Spirit Awards nominations:
Huge boosts for Precious and The Last Station, the leaders in the nomination tally. A Serious Man gets snubbed in quite a few places. A respectable showing for Crazy Heart and A Single Man as well, although some delusional fanboys are probably shocked at Julianne Moore's supposed "snub". The sadder thing to me is that Maggie Gyllenhaal didn't get a nomination |

Awards Circuit has "Up In The Air" as the new Best Picture favorite.

It's certainly getting good reviews, probably the best of Clooney's acting career. Sucks that My Girl Julianne was left out for Single Man, though the
Spirits often have a much different list than any of the others, and tend to have a bit of an attitude towards bigger stars.

My totally non-scientific, subject-to-change early prediction is that it will come down to Up in the Air vs The Hurt Locker for Best Picture.

I still don't get why everyone is so sure Hurt Locker will do so well. It has been out of most people's (minus the critics) minds for months. Pundits
talk about it, but nobody else. There is so little buzz, otherwise.

Um...are those supposed to be mainstream awards because I have only seen 1 of those movies....500 days of summer. WTF? I haven't even heard of most of
those.

Independent Films, Carboys. Usually, you will not have heard of about half of the films nominated. Several have not even seen wide release.

Well as soon as an independent studio purchases The Blind Side from whatever studio owns it, we can talk about Sandra's Independent Spirit snub.

Omg recognition for Two Lovers & Gwynethgoddess!! <3 For some reason I thought it was eligible for '08 and got snubbed
also I cannot believe Cold Souls got nominated for anything, let alone the boring hag (supporting actress) that made the film wretched every time she appeared |

How did Paltrow get nominated but not Phoenix? That movie was seriously good, though. Watched it on Netflix.

That surprised me too. Definitely the best acting I've seen Joaquin Phoenix do, I never really cared for him but watching Two Lovers made me sad to know
that he's gone off the deep end. It was a really raw, emotional performance and it broke my heart a little bit.
And I thought Gwyneth was more supporting than lead myself. She was awesome too, I've always loved her tho. |
