TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Bobby Bowden said he has not made a decision about his coaching future at Florida State University and plans to meet with school officials again on Tuesday. Reports on ESPN.com, citing sources close to the situation, and The Tallahassee Democrat indicated that Bowden plans to announce his retirement. The legendary 80-year-old coach met with FSU President T.K. Wetherell and athletic director Randy Spetman for an hour on Monday. Speaking at his home Monday evening, Bowden told the Associated Press that he is still sifting through "options presented to him." Bowden said Sunday that he wants to coach another year, which would be his 35th in Tallahassee, but he's not sure whether he'll be given the chance. In October, the chairman of the university's trustees had said Bowden should leave after this season. "I've got bosses. I've got people who would have to approve it," Bowden said recently. "It's going to be hard to go on without him, but I know eventually everyone has to leave, but it's kind of tough that he didn't go out like he wanted to, and hoping he could say, 'OK. It's time for me to go.' It just kind of hadn't worked out that way the last couple of years," former FSU player Bobby McGown said. The ESPN.com report indicated Bowden was given two options that included returning to the university next year "as an ambassador to the program" or retire after the upcoming bowl game. When asked about those reports, his wife, Ann, said nothing had been finalized -- "that's why they're meeting." Bowden said recently, "I would only want to come back as the head coach." The report also indicated that Bowden's heir apparent -- offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher -- "agreed to contract terms to replace Bowden after this season." Bowden's 388 career wins are second only to Penn State's Joe Paterno among major college coaches. This year, the Seminoles' season turned out less successful. The Seminoles finished 6-6 after losing to the University of Florida last week, 37-10. The Seminoles have not been close to beating the Gators the last three meetings, losing the other two 45-12 and 45-15. The winningest coach in Atlantic Coast Conference history, Bowden teams put together the most dominant run in college football history between 1987 and 2000 with 14 consecutive finishes in the nation's top five and a pair of national titles.
