Idina Menzel "Would Love To" Guest As 'Glee' Mom



A piece of the most perfect casting in TV history just might come to be: Tony winner Idina Menzel is game to get her mom on as the birth mother of 'Glee' songbird Rachel.

"I know that she would love that," Menzel's real-life husband, Taye Diggs told Fancast during an interview promoting the explosive double episode of 'Private Practice' airing this Thursday. Acknowledging the ladies' resemblance, he agreed such casting "would be awesome."

'Glee' fans have been lobbying for Menzel to guest-star as Lea Michele's look-alike on-screen mom - or any other relative - ever since the Fox series premiered. That campaign only swelled after Rachel performed "Defying Gravity," Menzel's showstopping number from Broadway's "Wicked," in a recent episode.

Diggs says that because his wife and Michele both are Broadway babies of slightly different generations, "They know each other, so we knew that [resemblance] existed far, far before the TV world did."

Helping this dream casting along even further is the fact that the two superb songstresses "are fans of each other." Diggs points out that he and Menzel caught Michele during her run in "Spring Awakening."

Diggs says he and Menzel TiVo 'Glee' every week - likely giving priority to ABC's own hit Wednesday comedy, "Modern Family'! - and since they both hail from the stage, "We are just so happy to see a lot of these theater kids [like Michele] get the opportunity to do some television work."

The talented 'Glee' cast is "doing a really great job," he adds, "and I hope some more will follow."
