They might as well call this the Iron Chef Bobby Flay show. I miss the Japanese version.

I watched the Chocolate battle marathon this weekend.
I experimented with a dark chocolate/expresso/chili/rock salt rub on a pork loin...sooooooo fucking GOOD! |

i wonder if anyone here knows about how the backstage stuff works - e.g., once the secret ingredient is announced, is there a big break for chefs to plan out
their menus and get the ingredients? surely all 5 iron chefs aren't sitting there and its fake stand-ins for the rest of the chefs in the pedastals? what
about keeping all the food warm and steaming (or frozen) for the chef who is second for judgement. or, who's making sure that what they plate at the end of
the hour is exactly what they serve teh judges later.

I rememember reading that the "Secret Ingredient"
isn't so secret; the chefs are given an advanced list of foods that may be used. |

Nomii - they did a "behind the scenes" episode once...you must have missed it. They actually inform the competing chefs of the secret ingredient
about 15 minutes before taping begins, and the chefs are given a list of possible SI's beforehand so they have an idea of what to bring. After the one hour
battle, the chefs get 45 minutes to prepare the dishes that are served to the judges - the one hour preparations are strictly for presentation on TV. You can
read all about it on the ICA wikipedia entry.

Did anyone watch the Morimoto Flay Battle last night? I can't believe that Morimoto only won by 1 point. He's so abused on this show. That ice smoker
was the most inventive thing on any Iron Chef ever.
Morimoto is a Cooking God. All others pale beside him. |

it was a fun one to watch....never mind Flay getting beat...

SuperJude wrote:I think Flay is pretty masterful..... That said last night I loved Flay v.Morimoto and the ice carving challenge BUT hated the secret ingredient. Like Flay said egg nog is NOT an ingredient but made up from several ingredients......I just didn't get it. |

Flay does the same shit over and over. None of his dishes last night could compare on any level to the creativity that Morimoto displayed. I'm not saying
he's terrible, but he's nowhere near Morimoto.
I've missed seeing Puck on this show, but I agree about Batali...he's very talented and creative, too. Has he ever lost a battle? Still, Morimoto makes the food that makes me wanna reach through the tv. |

I like Morimoto and Symon. Symon is just plain fun to watch I think.

Batali grosses me out. He sweats too much and is way too intense. Cracks me up that many who bitched about the bearded one on Top Chef ADORE Batali.

I don't adore him but he is a master chef. He definitely comes up with good looking food. The judges seem to love every single dish he makes.

Can I just point out that Wolfgang Puck was on ICA only ONE, repeat, ONE time??? While
he's certainly a great chef, he's not an Iron Chef.
ps yeah that cold smoker was out-of-this-world genius. |

I've missed seeing Puck on this show, but I agree about Batali...he's very talented and creative, too. Has he ever lost a battle? Win-loss records here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Chef_America#Iron_Chefs To answer the specific question: Mario Batali is 19-4 on the show. He's lost to Anita Lo, Traci Des Jardins, and John Besh, and when partnered with Hiroyuki Sakai lost to Flay and Morimoto on ICA: Battle of the Masters in 2004. (You can see specifics on wins and losses in Wikipedia's episode listing.) |

Wow...Morimoto has lost more than I thought.
I used to drink when Cat Cora lost but I ran out of alcohol. |
