Gee, this episode looked rather good for Jaison. If I hadn't eliminated him premerge, I'd be very tempted to place him highly.
Another great episode. I'm really enjoying this go-around far more than the past two seasons. While the editing has clearly left some poor contestants in the dust, I think they've edited events, stories, and the build-ups to TC rather well. I really enjoyed scep's post a few above mine; I suppose you might say I'm on the "Rebels" side, leaning pro-Russell-victory. Still, I've kept Mick as my second choice for a few episodes now, and I'm starting to think that may not be such a bad idea. The pre-merge proved that Mick was a contender (despite the heavy MOR-ness, you can't deny he was generally a strong choice), but I agree that his post-merge has been severely lacking in what is typical of edgic. This week, however, he received as winner-ish of a post-merge episode yet. Plus, all this crab imagery? I know it's just editing analysis, but could they represent those that hide and only come out of their shells when necessary-- perhaps like Mick? If the preview for next week holds up, it's looking rather strong for our Foa Foa leader. Unlike someone like Amanda's or Erinn's resurgence post-merge, Mick has the pre-merge to back it up. But still... my money's on Russell. Barely. Maybe I just like a good CP character (just like I picked Stephen, Ken, Marcus... and, yes, Parvati), but the focus on him this season is unprecedented and warrants further examination. Still, in my book, his high pre-merge visibility is the only strike against him. Ratings after one watch: Brett- INV (lol. poor guy. surely he's got a Natalie-esque ep coming up. except I'd wager more on the PP side.) Dave- MOR3 Jaison- CPP4 John- CP4 (I didn't quite see the N the first time, but reading others' comments, I'm sure it will find its way there. I did see him as far more CP than OTT) Mick- MOR3 Monica- UTR1 Natalie- UTRP1 Russell- CP4 Shambo- OTTM5 (as clear OTTM as I've ever seen) Winners: 1. Russell 2. Mick |

The Case for Jaison:
Episode 1 - Early on, we learn about him from his comment about how most people wouldn't pick him for a swimming challenge, based on stereotypes, but he's a champion water polo player. He got positive SPV from Mike, being surprised based on those same stereotypes. Then he got the confessional reflecting on Russell's sabotage, having had his socks burned in the tribe fire. Jaison has a connection to the theme of race, which dominated that early portion of the premiere for seemingly no reason, given how quickly Ben was expelled. And Jaison's sock-burning helped to explain Jaison's later whininess down the road. He really should've been given an MOR, and possibly even a P tone, for this episode. Episode 2 - Jaison is introduced as Russell's tightest ally, one that he actually takes seriously in comparison to his "Dumbass Girl Alliance". Jaison actually gets the first real positive SPV from Russell in this episode. Jaison is the first one Russell shows the idol, and we're always getting into his head about how the alliance with Russell will work out. This makes Jaison look good because Russell actually had to EARN his trust, again in comparison to the "Dumbass Girl Alliance". When Ben is an asshole and Mick defends him, Jaison knocks down the biggest asshole of the season. Jaison also shined in direct contrast to Ben in his assessment of Yasmin's visit, saying that fighting won't do anything, but fighting to win challenges will. Again, solid episode for Jaison. Episode 3 - This one is easy. This is Jaison's heroic episode. While everyone is just willing to go along with Russell and take out Ashley because he wants her gone, Jaison is the first (and only) person to stand up and go against Russell's wishes, and still survive. He fights against evil racist Ben, and he comes out sounding amazing and eloquent compared to the racist on the other side of Natalie. At this point, I would say he's the most positive character left in the game by far. Episode 4 - After a huge episode 3, Jaison gets a cooldown. Russell calls him a baby for complaining, but Jaison's complaints are justified later on, and are justified by the fact that Russell burned his socks. Still, the N is appropriate for this episode. Jaison, however, shows just how much struggling Foa Foa has to deal with for several episodes, so I don't really think he's dealing with a redemption arc. His "this is the worst decision I've ever made" could be doubt, or could be means to hide him, or hell, it could just be an ironic clip brought up in the finale. The fact is, Jaison gets decent screentime in the first episode where Foa Foa doesn't go to tribal council. Episode 5 - Again, another episode of Jaison complaining. I admit, things looked bad in episodes 4 and 5, but they could've easily shown him complaining as a voiceover. They've done it before. Instead we got a close-up of those creepy, pale hands, proving just how tough life really is, and just how tough he has it himself. He re-iterates his statement about being on the water polo team, but says Survivor is tougher. Wouldn't him surviving and proving that it's possible to survive the harsh elements make a great storyline? Episode 6 - Jaison gets more introspection about how he wants to find the strength to pull through a tough time like the one he's going through. During this episode, Jaison also narrates the sadness of losing that pizza reward that they more than likely would've won, due to Russell S. getting medevaced. He even goes out of his way to say he hopes Russell is okay. I'm not entirely sure why he earned an N for this episode, because he really wasn't THAT bad. When he laughed in the water, it was better than Mick saying he wished he'd been voted out like Ashley. When he complained about the loss, we're supposed to feel for Foa Foa, because they just can't catch a break. Episode 7 - This episode is a bad one, the OTTN. But at the same time, the stuff that made Jaison OTTN is kinda stuff that HAD to be shown. He was physically weaker and fell behind in the challenge. As such, he was the decoy boot that Liz tried to get the tribe to take out. This was the low point of his journey. But even here, he showed a tremendous amount of self-awareness. He was ashamed about his own performance. We heard how he felt he performed badly, and that earns him a little respect, since he didn't try to hide his failure. At tribal council, he reiterates this: he messed up. We've seen plenty of players blatantly fuck up and then try to deny it, but Jaison owned it. To me, he was less than OTT. Maybe CP/OTTN. But this edit wasn't as bad as it seemed. Episode 8 - Jaison starts off the Foa Foa rallying cry this episode after an abysmal past few episodes. This doesn't feel like a true redemption, because he's not really on a journey to make up for his earlier fuck-ups. Jaison called out Erik for being full of crap and actually put the events of the episode in motion. We didn't need to see that. We could've been shown SOLELY Natalie's role, but we got Jaison pushing for Erik's boot. And then Jaison has his big confrontation with Erik at tribal council, where once again, he is the hero fighting against the big bully. And by the end of it, Erik even respects Jaison a little bit more for fighting so passionately. Jury connection? I think so. He said he would be happy leaving once Erik is gone, but he's still here three rounds later. Episode 9 - Jaison gives positive credit to Natalie for her rat-catching. Jaison is also the first person we see learning about Russell finding the new idol. This goes back to episode two when Russell found the original idol and told Jaison. Recall that Mick seemed to have replaced Jaison around episode 4 or 5, but here we have Jaison seeming to be Russell's right hand man. Not good, but not a bad episode either. Jaison continues to remain on peoples' radars. Episode 10 - Jaison has his first scene of non-Russell strategy (alongside Mick) where he talks to Monica and he puts himself in charge, saying that they can take out John if that's what she wants. Not a lot of substance for Jaison this episode, but I feel like he needed somewhat of a cooldown, especially going into episode 11. Recap - Jaison had a scene left out from that third challenge (where the Ben/Betsy storyline was much more important) where he got into a fight with John (that didn't come up again), and he got a great introspective moment about why he needs to win. Again, he has a negative moment, but he understands that and knows that he made a mistake and needs to work on changing it. Now, not a lot of other info, but Jaison had that important scene, and who knows what the importance of the recap is. Episode 11 - Jaison was majorly P again this episode, as he has been since the merge. He sacrificed for his tribe in order to make sure that he would have a better chance of winning immunity and preventing a Galu from winning immunity. He's upset with his decision, because he's hungry, but his exact words were that he needed to make a sacrifice for the good of the alliance. Once again, Jaison gives a confessional about how he may be annoyed with someone, but he's not going to go out of his way to alienate that person (Shambo) unnecessarily. And Jaison wins immunity, making him the big hero in order to guarantee that at the least, Dave wasn't immune to alienate Shambo. And then comes Jaison's crowning moment, where he shows intelligence and awareness of a potential problem down the road while Mick is willing to go with whatever Russell wants. Overall, Jaison has a great edit. Very solid numbers. Very positive in those first three episodes and since the merge. And the negativity between those times is backed up by the harsh conditions we see in the environment (episode 4 is the ONLY bad part about Jaison's edit). He's been very introspective throughout the series. He's never been arrogant and he's been a very heroic character overall. He's got a connection to the early theme of race in episode one. He has proven himself strong, a survivor of the man test (somewhat). He seems like the best fit, Edgically. Russell is right behind him and Mick is third, but Jaison's the only one who fits both the criteria of strong story, and balance to his ratings. |

Yes, Jaison looks good now, but I had him eliminated after episode 6. He went way down for me after his story
effectively stopped after Ep3, and in the next four eps, ratings of MORN-MOR-OTT-MORN (according to me) represent a new story line tinged with negativity (game
quitting, complaining) that I found more reprehensible than even Russell's (always CP-based) negativity. Now that he's had a great CPP-esque post
merge, I feel like his story is more about personal growth and redemption than winning the game. If I hadn't eliminated him, though, he'd definitely
still be on my winner list... but a character introduction as up-and-down as Jaison's (and Shambo's) is just as ill-fitting of Edgic as an
Amanda/Erinn-esque UTR premerge.

Jaison had a fantastic episode tonight. Fantastic.
Mick was terrible until post-TC. He picked up there. Nothing for Natalie. Russell has all the jury connections as of late. |

LMFAO....poor Brett, no screentime whatsoever =(
Atleast he got 3 minutes of talking Brett - INV1 [not even visible at the auction, editors Dave - MORM3 [N for killing chickens, P for his reason] Jaison - OTTP4 [I think his move warrant a 4, and he wants his former tribe to make it all the way by sacrificing, I think he shouldn't get what Mick would get....since he's wayyy more visible than Mick in this ep.] John - CPN5 [we get to his insights....he talked and deal, he eat the pie alone and got a Negative SPV from Russell....so I think he deserves a 5 for all of that] Mick - MOR3 [I am tempted to give an N seeing that he only relies to Russell to sway someone to their side if there would have been a 4-4 tie Monica - UTR1 [got a confesh! and now with much more bushy armpit] Natalie - UTR1 [she has her moments! but she's that ignored and when I look at the chart of her, Brett and Kelly, I cried Russell - CP5 [such a strategic g.oddess <3] Shambo - OTTM5 [the purest OTTM I've ever seen!] |

I really don't understand how Jaison is not the top pick here either. His edit is reminding me of Jenna's in Amazon.
He's had the best story/meat to his edit since episode one. |

bryanpasa wrote: When did Dave kill chickens? And what was his reason for killing chickens that he... didn't kill? That's like giving Shambo an M because she was very polite to the aliens on the UFO. "Moves" like Jaison's are associated with the rating or tone, not visibility. If you thought his moved sucked would he thus deserve a 1 or 2? Same with John. Same with Russell. "psycho" is not an M-related word. In fact, a straight OTT would be better than mixed because her entire edit was borderline bizarre, as if she was dealing with inner demons and wee voices that mutter strange things in her ears. And I simply do not understand the OTTs for Jaison. Pure CP. |

And I simply do not understand the OTTs for Jaison. Pure CP. I definitely agree 100%. There was definitely nothing OTT about Jaison at all last night, he was purely CP. Especially after that talk with Mick about them potentially alienating Shambo. |

gretchensucks wrote: I haven't really had time for edgic this season, but he is the person whose editing pattern fits edgic principles the best. The essentials, (as opposed to details of guidelines), of edigic are a strong memorable start, followed by a period pre-merge where a character is on the radar screen, but in the background, then come the merge, his story picks up steam, so that it cresendoes at Final Tribal Council. Russell doesn't fit that because he's been the primary distraction. He's the tits on the magician's assistant. You pay attention to him, while the trick gets performed right under your nose. At the other end of the spectrum, Natalie doesn't fit, because she never had the strong memorable start. It's simply bad storytelling to wait until your story is 1/4 over to introduce your protagonist. Just about all of the Galudiots went off the radar screen completely for at least part of the pre-merge except for Shamu, who is basically Russell's psychotic alter-ego. She has less than comic book depth. Basically, if Wile E. Coyote and the Joker had a baby that was labotomized, then dropped on it's head, you'd get Shambo. So that left Mick and Jaison, who were the only two that should have gotten consideration at the merge. The fact that Mick disappeared at the merge, and Jaison's story picked up steam at the merge pretty much sealed the deal for Jaison as the winner. Edgic is a big picture instrument, but some people are getting too bogged down in the details. The whole "That MOR4 in episode 4 killed his chances" stuff is the exact opposite of the way edgic should be used to determine a winner. It's a general pattern that you're supposed to look for. |

After watching that episode, no way did I think Natalie was as invisible as the visibility suggests. I'm not arguing against an UTRP1 ranking, but the
things I remembered without watching too closely were Natalie at the auction and her third place at the challenge. And she had a chat with Russ if I remember
correctly too. Not a major character, but I certainly remember her a lot more than the numbers suggest. Maybe it's just the hormones speaking As for the winner, my pick was Mick, so I'm sticking with that, but I see him neck and neck with Jaison right now. There is no reason Jaison should not be in one of the top 2 picks right now. He's been a huge character all season, and although I'm getting more "climbing the mountain" vibes from him, he has a huge connection to winning, and is certainly more visible post merge then Mick. I don't think RHantz is going to win. Monica had a quote thrown in early on about being loyal and honest, and that and Mick's Snake line in the promo defintely contradicts that. Just goin' on a tangent here, but Monica really is our thematic narrator this season. She started out telling us that being a leader was bad. Mick got that. Nat's not the leader. Jaison's not the leader. Whose the real leader? Hantz. Then she was shown showing the laid back attitudes of the Galu's. And now this comment on trust and loyalty (if someone has the exact phrasing that'd be great) I know she's not a major character, but they've shown her buddying up to Mick and Jaison as well. I just get a feeling that her attention has nothing to do with her winning (obviously with her edit) but rather that she embodies what the jury will base their vote on. And if next episode heads in the direction I think it will, her narration and relationship with Mick, as well as him possibly targetting Russ, are why Mick will win in the end. Theme has nothing to do with Edgic, but it might explain her constant, but low presence. We're to keep her in the back of our minds, as she's been
the voice of reason on Galu (not voting Erik, and will explain why the vote will go the way it does.) It won't be for Mick, but against Russell and his
puppet Natalie.

Monica's edit is in line to be the last Galu standing.
Constant, albeit weak presence. The only person besides Russ and Mick to have a confessional every episode. The early focus must mean something, and you could be on to something. She was fighting with the season's hero (Sham) and yet has been spared of that negativity as of late. The merge edit was intriguing; Monica will run to Russell after Laura goes. Why was that included? We haven't seen why yet. It is so out of place and really hasn't come full circle yet. It's like her edit is on pause until all her allies are gone. |

Chap, I thought the Monica-run-to-RH moment in the merge was actually referring backwards, to the talk they had when Monica went over to Foa Foa after one of
the Galu victories (when Shambo sent her).
It seemed to tie the two events together, and I thought it probably ended there. But you may be right and it will be referred to again. |
