To make a long story short, I spent a month in the hospital and am now at home (away from school...not living in my house there) until next semester. Some of
my housemates have apparently taken umbrage with my logic when I said I didn't think I should be responsible for paying part of the utility bill. Am I in
the wrong here or do I just live with some of the douchiest people on the planet?

there are several ways of looking at this:
1) you pay regardless because it's your commitment or 2) your friends give you a pass because you weren't there or 3) your friends make you pay regardless because they're douchy and don't like you. get better friends. 4) move out. utilities paid by them. :-) i mean seriously if you're not living there why should you pay? i don't get it. |

The way I see it, whether you were there or not you do owe a portion of the utilities. Assuming the house has to be maintained at a minimum of X degrees
(depending on where you live) then it really is still your responsibility to help cover that part. The heat has to be on whether you were there to enjoy it or
not. I think a fair amount would be half of what you normally would pay.
If they are real friends and can afford to let you slide then that would even be better...but I don't see why they are obligated to completely absorb your portion if they're poor college kids too. |

Pay your rent (duh) but utilities is stupid. Maybe pony up twenty bucks or so (some utilities costs are going to be static - like keeping the fridge running,
wasting heat on your room, whatever) but there is no way you are responsible for an equal share of the utilities.

When you and your roommates agreed to live together, I'm sure it was assumed that every month the utilities would be split and they counted on that
financially. It's not their fault you spent a month in the hospital; you have already made the financial commitment. Don't be such a tightwad.
It's not worth losing friends to save ten or twenty bucks.
