I also wonder why we always are at war, always have an enemy. It's fucking draining. I think part of the problem is that we feel like if we don't fight
the smaller wars now that we will fight bigger ones later. For instance, what would have happened if the US and Euroep had stood up to Hitler from the
beginning? If we hadn't fought Vietnam would we have had a large scale war with the USSR? Many of our wars seemed to have had happy endings, Germany and
Japan are Democratic countries that aren't going to attack anyone else, and as a result of the Cold War (which many would argue includes Vietnam and maybe
even Korea), Eastern Europe is full of democratic nations that aren't interested in expanding their boundaries. Now some in the US feel that the Middle Eat
will be the next area that is ripe for Democracy. Personally I have my doubts, there are few examples of freeom and Democracy coexisting with Islam, although
Turkey is trying its best.
So, in a nutshell, we are trying to rebuild the world in our image. And we have been somewhat successful at doing so, and the world is often better for it. |

PM makes an excellent point -- in history, we never know how alternative scenarios will work out. In the 1930s, everyone thought appeasement was the way to go,
because they had been through a brutal war 20 years earlier and Germany had been fucked at Versailles and legitimate grievances. In the long run, it probably
would have been better to squash Hitler in the 30s, but then likely Chamberlain would be remembered as a war monger and Hitler as a martyr. No one knows what
might have followed in later years.
Right now, America is in an untenable situation because we are the world's only superpower: if we don't police the world, we are accused of being greedy and selfish; if we do police the world we are called warmongers. What's going on in the Middle East and Central Asia has been simmering for 50 years, but the Soviets always kept an iron lid on it. With the Soviets gone all the different groups in that area are fighting for dominance. And since we don't have a consistent foreign policy, the rest of the world perceives us as weak and will continue to challenge us. If you're the biggest kid on the street, people are going to come after you one way or the other. |

Man can't control the earth. The sooner we all realize that Mother Nature is in control, the sooner we can do away with war.

johnnymullet wrote: damn, you are a dumbass 'SUPERPOWER' is the ability to project your dominance globally. China has NO HEAVY LIFT capacity...none. They also have a very small, weak Naval presence. The fact that they are building aircraft Carriers is a sign that they want to be a superpower...but nuttin, and I mean nuttin spells dominacne like parking a US supercarrier off a coast of a troublemaker and having the ability to decimate them from the air from only one...of our many...supercarriers. China couldn't get their tanks and troops across the globe. they simply lack the lift with their planes as well. Think, for once, mullethead. |

You thickie...Subs, Carriers, Heavy Lift capability, Marines, Airborne infantry, fast mobile infantry, QRF's, Air Force projection, Navy, etc...= Superpower. you really are quite daft in military speak. This is obvious. |
