And at this rate, Carrie should hit platinum by early next year or earlier, no?

I talked my mom out of buying a SuBo CD. She just bought it when I left her alone in Barnes and Noble anyway. Pfft. It's definitely catered to the older,
non-iTunes/Limewire using audience, I think, which is probably why it is ranking high numbers each and every week. Plus I hear it's pretty good :/

Well at least wait until Boxing Day and see it maybe there's some sort of deal on older CDs. They might have an even better sale this year to drive sales.
Good luck finding it.

Most of Susan Boyle's fans probably don't own computers and have no idea what an MP3 player IS, let alone own one. The probably think file sharing is
something file clerks do on their lunch hour. In fact, they need to release her stuff on vinyl so her fans who don't have CD players can buy it also.

One of the gifts I'm getting my mom for Christmas is Susan Boyle's album. =)

Now, let's not be mean to the fans of the Bestselling Female Superstar of the Year. Adam's fans, if you look at the Scary Boards, are also in the 40+
range, so they're not spry or hip either. Let's not downplay the success of the BEAUTIFUL SUSAN BOYLE.

8trackmind wrote:I was reading an article in NYT, I think, about how vinyl is becoming popular again, in some places anyway. Here it is. The problem with saying Susan Boyle's fans are so out of touch that they have her CD because they can't do anything else is that this just makes the sales for Idol people even more pathetic. Idol's audience is aging every year, their young demos drop more and more, and several winners, like Taylor Hicks, have been dismissed as people the grannies would like. Yet when it came time for the sales, there was never as much interest in actually buying the CD as there is with Susan Boyle. It's almost embarrassing for the industry that so many of their hyped names are not doing that well and this weird woman they never would have let in the building is now on track to sell almost 2 million albums in the US alone. I guess they will just say she doesn't count because she isn't moving singles, or she doesn't have enough young buyers. |

Well, part of her suceess is the age group she is targeting. Anywhere from 40-70 year old women. Soccer moms, daytime stay at home moms who watched all
the craze on morning talk shows.

I think Miki's assessment is very accurate.
As for Kris I think his genre of music is much more typically seen with smaller scale, independent artists like another fellow from Arkansas Joe Purdy. Its more like a folk/rock kind of styling and since he's with Jive they've added in some pop flavour. This kind of music isn't typically a mainstream seller or widely known so for Kris to win American Idol was kind of strange and for him to sell even 100 K or whatever he's at now is probably good for that type of music. Its not whats popular right now and fans of his genre of music I would imagine don't watch AI much, or wouldn't be inclined to check him out of their own volition. He can probably have longevity but it unless Jive starts pushing him harder or releasing better singles or targeting the right demographics it will very low key career, which is fine really but I'm sure most will see him as a failure b/c a lot of people, here anyway seem incapable of understanding that there are different kinds of success. When you come off AI they've made it so that you're supposed to fit into a certain mold and be a certain kind of successful but really it shouldn't have to be that way. |

MikiBoi wrote:Is Kelly still for the young ones? I guess I can't tell as much because her musical direction changes a lot. She sold huge amounts of CDs with Breakaway. Then Clive Davis helped kill her next CD, although it may have died anyway, and she seemed to be almost forced into a more pop-oriented record. While the single sales are doing well and she's doing OK in CD sales, I wonder if some aren't interested because they may know it might not be what she wanted. The labels also seem to never be sure what singles to release. Over and over you hear fans of Kelly or Adam or Cook say the wrong singles were chosen. I think that the show and the labels generally want to pretend that it's only young, hip fans who support Idol winners. So that may be why they are happy to discard or downplay those winners who don't. Then again I think Idol only really cares as long as their favorite isn't outshone by anyone else in the season. As long as no one else from AI8 sells better than Adam (which is likely), then they will be satisfied. I think the label somehow banked on the idea of Adam being hugely successful on his name alone, which greatly overestimates how influential the show is these days. For Susan Boyle to sell this many CDs, and not to have a big dropoff after the first week, suggests she's getting a very large audience who could be cultivated to spend money elsewhere. Yet the industry is probably going to just cover their eyes, since it's not the image they want. |

I know I'm going to seriously date myself here, but the Adam-Kris pseudo-rivalry reminds me of the Elton John-James Taylor pseudo-rivalry from many moons
ago (circa somewhere around early 1970s, when I was a child I tell you, a child!) .... Anyhoo ... At that time, this flamboyant glam-dude Elton John burst onto
the scene about the same time as this mellow folk-rock fellow James Taylor. I think they were on the cover of Time, and the buzz was all about who will
survive and who will be a one hit wonder. I remember being a kid, looking at the magazine and picking my favorite - James Taylor by a landslide! lol, who the
heck was this weird balding dude with the oversized plastic glasses on and the big ego? Ew. LOL, that makes me laugh today.
Elton had "Crocodile Rock" and James Taylor had "Fire and Rain" on the charts around this time. Of course Fire and Rain is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. But James Taylor was associated with the Beatles, and appearing in concerts that would later finance the creation of the Greenpeace. So he was a big mega-hippie fav, for sure. Meanwhile Elton John was doing glam rock alongside David Bowie, and going in a completely different direction, writing songs with Bernie Taupin for pop-rock radio. Here the differcnce between them, at the time. James Taylor - "Fire and Rain" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXZxf0uorzQ&feature=related. Elton John - "Crocodile Rock" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTa8U0Wa0q8 So, every time I read about Kris v. Adam, I think of these two! And of course we know how it all came out. Both are mega-icons, doing completely different music and both are successful. Of course Elton hit the stratosphere by continuing to put out phenomenal songs and hits. James Taylor won his latest Grammy in 2006, and that year the Grammy's had a huge concert in his honor, with Springsteen, Sting, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, the Dixie Chicks, Alison Kraus, and Paul Simon all paying tribute to him. I know, I know, the big difference is that those two wrote their own songs, and went on to continue to write amazing songs. That is what both Kris and Adam, and every other AI alum will have to do to really create a long lasting legacy. But IF they can pull that off (a big IF I know!), then they'll likely both go on to have pretty successful careers, despite the fact their music is so different. |

As for Susan Boyle's success, I think it says loud and clear to the music industry, people HATE the freakin' music they are putting out! Susan Boyle
has a very pleasant voice, and she's damn good, so give her some credit, you jealous peons. lol.
But seriously, how ridiculous is it to have the big argument be whether Kelly's latest song sounds exactly like Beyonce's, or just kinda like it? lol. And oh yes, it also sounds like seven other songs on the radio too, hmmmm, including one by Jordin Sparks. The music is just overall, bad. Period. |

The problem isn't that they sound the same the problem is that toolbox Ryan Tedder gave them both the same song and now he's denying it. Its obvious to
anyone with ears that Halo and Already Gone have the same backing track, that moron is just being an epic douchebag.

I totally agree.
The problem with the music industry today are the likes of Ryan Tedder and Kara Deoguardi. Banish the songwriters on a payroll, it produces mediocrity! Edited because that ^^ is not exactly true. The real problem is giving singers songwriting credit. That policy has produced mediocrity. When real songwriters are left on their own to create the WHOLE song, we get great songs, as in the days of Sinatra and the classic pop(ular) songs.

James Barber wrote:X So on the spot. I would attribute her success to also being a regular woman who many can identify with instead of the manufactered crap music with a great body (Mariah's latest is an ex). I think people are tired of the whole popstar look and want people who are about the art and voice. But that's not what sells apparently. This is one of the most accurate comments I've ever read in this thread. She had a 24% drop on week 2 from the biggest week opening. Now she is going to surpass perhaps her first week figures and possibly the week after that. People have to give credit to the woman, like her or hate her, she is doing mindblowingly well. Kudos to her. |
