There was the issue of him being able to kidnap both Claire and Charlie, make such good time through the jungle including leaving a dummy trail, and still have time to hang Charlie from a tree. But it was most explicit in a later episode when he grabbed Charlie by the throat and lifted him off the ground with one hand pinning him against a tree.

There's also the issue of Scott's death. Dude was all messed up. Wasn't it something freaky like every bone in his body was broken? We were left with the assumption Ethan killed him since he threatened to kill one lostie a day until he got Claire back.

Steve didn't. Hurley said so. Walt said so. Sawyer read Steve's message in a bottle & it said Steve was doing some married chick named Tracy or something like that. Extra/Actor mix-up. They looked all dirty and feral and when we come to see them later, other than living on the island, they were clean and relatively normal looking. Then I thought maybe they were from a time flash and that's why they looked so ghostly/supernatural walking by, but The Others weren't the ones stuck in the time flashes, it was only the Losties still on the island when the phenomena started. The writers definitely dropped the ball with this one.

I gave the benefit of the doubt to the writers and just assumed that Ethan met up with some of the others who helped him set up the dummy trail and string up Charlie. Lifting Charlie up by the throat isn't very superhuman, because Charlie is a scrawny strung out shrimp and would be easy to lift. As for kicking Jack's ass, that also was no surprise, because Jack is all bark and no bite. Sun could probably take Jack in a fight. *doing my best to goad Felicia"

But after watching so many seasons and with all the broken bones, etc., my #1 suspect for killing Scott is the smoke monster.

Remember the fake beard and costumes Kate found in the Staff. They were dirty and dressed like hillbillies at the end of S2 on the dock when they took Jack, Kate, and Sawyer and let Hurley, Mike, and Walt go. Then S3 started with the big surprise that they were living in houses on the island and even had a book club.

Except mine also said that right before Ethan tossed jack around like a rag doll and kicked his ass, Jack had just fallen down a mini-cliff-thing and bonked his head on a rock, so no superhuman strength was required. And I too think Smokey fucked up Scott.
