It was just a shitty movie...nothing great...no great acting. You give an Oscar to happy go lucky Tom Hanks when he plays a slow man dealing with life or as a AIDS infected person dealing with the disease. You give an Oscar to Hilary Swank when she transforms herself into Maggie in Million Dollar Baby. You dont give an Oscar to a loud, abrasive, black women acting like a loud, abrasive, black women. I remember watching her stand up "I coulda been your cell mate" a couple years ago and it was the same Mo'Nique we saw in Precious but in a comical sense and not a mean spirited one. Its just a movie that falls right in line with Basketball Diaries/Dangerous Minds mentalities.

I've not seen the movie (and probably wont' either) but these types of movies almost never live up to the hype and the overexposure of the movie and it's actors almost always means the award winners will be few. Best Actress and Actress have almost always gone to veterans who have paid their dues and done tons of flicks that were stellar and not so stellar. When a woman wins the Oscar she almost always had a huge transformation in her appearance, ie. Hilary Swank, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron - who else?? Supporting roles tend to go to the newbies, so Precious has a chance at that Oscar, but I doubt Monique will even come close to a win - or even a nom.

That may true, but I think no matter who it was that year, people would have a problem with Julia winning an Oscar. Of all my friends, I think I'm about the only one who likes her. I don't know why, but I do and always have. She makes me smile, what can I say. To me, she's what I think of when I think of what a movie star is...with or without the awards. Also, everytime I see her, she seems to bring out the best in her co-stars. She's acted alongside some of the most boring people and they seem better when she's in a picture with them.
