Hosea-bag was/is an unlikeable and talentless idiot You have to remember that all the episodes except the final four and finale are filmed months ahead of time. Yes, they know who's going to finale but not who wins. The finale was filmed something like 6 weeks ago. It's hard to give someone a winner's edit when they haven't won yet. Other than Robin's winning quickfire and the restaurant wars dessert based on that dish (that I contend Michael V. pushed her to improve), everything Robin made got blasted. Who did Mike I. outlast that he should have left before? Maybe Ashley, but they were shown as being at a fairly similar level... That being said, if ANY of those middle-of-the-packers, including Mike I., had beaten Jen, Kevin, or a Voltaggio brother, I would have been annoyed. I found it interesting that, if one had ONLY seen last night's show, they may have thought that Kevin was the douche of the season. He was the one shown to be whining about his sous chefs. Michael even praised the heck out of JESSIE!

Look at some of the things he's won.. a chance to compete in that high falutin' cook off thingy (love those technical terms) and a guest chef spot at next years Pork and Pinot event. I think there are other things too.. He came off as a really nice guy who can cook.. and I would rather eat his meals than either of the Voltaggios. I totally agree, he did come off well. I don't know if I'd rather eat his food than the brothers, but they're totally different chefs and all good. As far as the editing goes, unless Michael said nothing but douchebaggy shit and shit about his brother in his confessionals...come to think of it, that's probably all he did say. Maybe they couldn't edit him any better. When he finally got a personality, it was as an asshole.

I love me some Bryan though and wanted him from early on. Yukon didn't have a chance, in my opinion. While I like him just fine as well. I actually liked this season, with the exception of Padmabitch. Bring back Bourdain! And more Nigella. I hope they all go on to do really well. Bring on Season 7!

Good food doesn't necessarily have to be all tricked out and fancy. Maybe uppity people think so, but even Older Voltaggio said that Kevin's food is simple and there's nothing wrong with that if you know what you're doing. Nowadays, when it seems like everybody and their mother has become a food snob, it's nice to see a chef who concentrates on simple dishes that are just as fantastic, but without all the frippery.

The key, though, is knowing what you're doing. You can't serve mushrooms (or, for that matter, pork belly) that is tough.

People mess up sometimes; it doesn't mean they don't know what they're doing. Ugly Volt screwed up during this competition too. They all did. I don't think there's any way not to with the time constraints that these people have to perform under.

People defending his "simple" style have a point, but only on the dishes (granted, most of them) that he executes well.

I appreciate Keven's approach to food more than I appreciate so many others that have been cast over so many seasons. I watch this show because I love food. I love honest, good, from-the-soul food. Pull a baby carrot from the ground, hose it off, bite in....heaven. There is a world of flavor, texture, complexity in that single bite. I loathe over-contrived, taken-so-far-out-of-their-element-they're-no-longer-recognizable food (Marcel and his fucking foam!)! I love when several different things are combined in a way that they elevate one another - but I still want to recognize and appreciate each individual element I hate hate hate hate hate food snobs, who view food as nothing more than a status symbol and have no real appreciation And I think that's part of the reason Michael's win isn't as satisfying as Bryan's, Kevin's or Jen's...would've been, in this particular season. I just don't believe in Michael's love of food. By all appearances (granted, as it was edited), he sees it as material to be manipulated, but doesn't really love it. He loooooves competition...especially with his brother - but I get the sense, that if Bryan had gone into architecture, Michael would've too. He doesn't seem drawn to food because he loves it; he seems drawn more to the competition Again - I can accept his win, because he has talent....I just don't believe that he has the same intrinsic/organic bond with food, that the other three seem to have

Those seasons where it is all about the edges of the craft bugged me, because the food did not draw me in. I even felt Hung did a bit too much stuff that drew from the appeal of the food for me. That said, a realluy inventive dish like the Voltaggios did often intrigues me... and their dishes often LOOKED very tasty and flavorful. Kevin's stuff I liked, too. I am a real foodie; but I don't see this whole class issue thing. Simple food can be amazing and pure and a great experience; AND sometimes a really interesting flavor combination or risky style of cooking can make the dish unexpected and just totally wow me. It doesn't need to indicate snobbery.

That was one restaurant where I would be willing to eat the finagled stuff...because the care and actual LOVE of the original ingredients was obvious, and the taste of those was (from description of Bourdain) BETTER the way they did it. Most though? No. I agree with azca, and that was a wonderful post. I would never bother eating at either brother's restaurant. Ever. I agree with Carla a little bit, that who you are seeps into your food. I don't like their approach or their energy, I feel no love for food, just for showing off, and I don't want to eat that. Kevin's food? Oh hell, I would eat his stuff in a heartbeat. This is a weird scenario, but it kind of illustrates how I feel about the final four. Say I was eating at one of their restaurants? This is what it feels like would happen should they serve me something I really didn't like. Jen: Apology, seemingly since, and suggestions, and substitution of somethings she would know (from my complaint.) She might bitch in the kitchen, but to me, her customer, it would be handled smoothly and graciously. Mike: Argument, petulant, only outwardly polite, back to kitchen, loud enough for me to hear, he would ask for them to come up with something I, a person of obviously no taste or discernment would like, perhaps a McRib. Bryan: Tense, cursory apology, only slightly-grudging offer to replace, and my server would seem to be on pins and needles for the rest of the meal. Kevin: He would be very friendly, apologize, investigate why it was bad, talk over menu choices with me, bring me something delicious as replacement, either comp the dessert or send me home with the wine I had chosen for the meal, or offered me an "on the house" for next time. Then he would go back to the kitchen, tear apart that unliked-plate, figure out if he need to change the menu to reflect something in the dish, rework it completely, or look at his quality control if he also found that my plate was substandard. He would not bitch to his staff, and my waiter would be relaxed.

I am pretty certain Michael would be hcarming enough to a guest, just Hell to work for/with. It cracks me up that you are playing mental detective and trying to sit inside of these chefs' heads. I would eat in Bryan's restaurant because his love for food is apparent. Michael's feelings seem to be a love to experiement and a need to "win." KEvin also has a love for CERTAIN ingredients. Jen just seems good at what she does. I'd likely try any of their food to see, but would easily be encouraged to try Bryan's restaurant (and if you read reviews, they say he basically is very quiet in the kitchen, as he was in the show, and lets others handle the front of the house... and also has a clear desire to produce local, sustainable and delicious product. That alone draws me in). I would also love to try Kevin's restaurant and maybe share a beer. Carla... I would hire her any day of the week because she has clear love of comfort food, of a dining experience, and believes the energy you put into the meal is what comes out.

The Volts come off as "I am smarter than you, and I don't give a damn if YOU, you miserable little nothing, "like" it or not. You should feel privileged that I bothered to cook for you at all!"
