United way blows. They give to stupid rec and communiity centers and they in turn give the money to deadbeats who don't bother paying thier bills. Or they
use the money to have al sharpton come and tlk to the at risk youth.
I would give 2% of my check to any charity who added birth control to the food at homeless shelters. |

and I won't give to groups that spend more on mailings and newsletters than I give in donations - I used to give to Habitat for Humanity under my name, but got tired of the monthly newsletter and begging letters - now I do it anonymously You know that's kind of stupid, right? They are still spending your money on mailings and newsletters. |

In the immediate aftermath, they brought the total under 50%, then within a year, after the publicity died off, it was back up over 75%. Basically, it's one of the most fraudulent and corrupt organizations on the face of the planet. They make the average third world dictator look benevolent. |

I like to give money to Heifer International because it allows me to give someone the gift of bees.
Also, I will donate to anything that is selling World's Finest Chocolate. I don't care if it's Puppykickers for Satan, if they're selling it, I'm buying it. |

squashthebeef wrote:My husband is on the Board of the local Habitat group. When he started I told him about the overwhelming amount of mailings we got from donating. He looked into it and it turns out there is a covenant in the charter that states each group has to send out a certain number of mailings each year in order to get their $$$ from national. If they choose to decrease mailings, national takes over and basically blankets that area with mass mailings and decreases the local office monies. Even with him sitting on the Board, it took over one year to get us off the mailing list and in that time we got at least a weekly letter request begging for more money. I now just donate directly to the local office with materials only. |

I give to the red cross. I've seen first hand cases of them actually helping people.

What the hell does helping people have to do with anything? I thought it was about giving to the group that you agree with politically.

We had a cub scout meeting at one of those build a bear places this week. It was pretty cool, half the boys made bears for the local children's hospital
while the other half made "NOT FOR HOMO KIDS" cards. I left with a warm feeling in my heart.

I hate the breast cancer nazis. At work in October they were almost as bad as the United Way.

might I suggest CBR Relief and Rescue? No one gets a salary and we have to find the funds locally to support each chapter and we helped these cuties find new
homes:

The great thing about charities is that there are millions of them? I would think such need would be kind of a depressing thing.
