The premise of the Code, and of Dexter's life, was that the only victims that wound up on his table and into the Gulf Stream were those who were missed by legitimate law enforcement. Thanks for bringing that up, I remember thinking that when this all started. Think the writers have been a little sloppy with the code in general; guess it can be passed off as Dexter being confused/learning/etc., but has just never clicked with me as 'Dexter-like'. |

I'd guess that he hadn't been through law enforcement's system, and escaped, or he wouldn't have been working as a choir director. And he killed the nurse who was poisoning Harry. He killed the couple smuggling Cubans in. And a lot of the victims they investigated in the Bay Harbor case, they found no criminal record for, but digging deeper found evidence of murders they'd committed. Presumably, none of them had been "through the system." I think the code was just more that it was unpunished murderers.

I always thougth the essential basis of the code had nothing to do with whether or not the authorities had had first crack at someone. It was whether or not
killing said person would result in saving the lives of future victims.
That was Harry's formula, Dex needs to kill people and some people need a killin. It's a win win. Dex certainly got in the way of the cops finding Freebo last year. Theory for big huge reveal - Deb's been killing |

evolving beyond a programmed robot and into more of a human with real emotions. Never happen. The punching had nothing to do with emotion, and the attack on Arthur was just an opportunity. Dexter growing emotions would be akin to the Grinch's heart growing 3 sizes that day, and I would be so out. |

I agree, Red.
Also, Dexter definitely seems to show emotion when it comes to children (ultimate innocents) being in danger. If he felt no emotion, he would not have felt the need to show up Thanksgiving at Trinity's house to protect the son. I think Dexter feels a need to protect children and save their innocence so they don't end up with a Dark Passenger like he did, exposed to terrible violence and/or gruesome deaths. He has also shown emotion & overprotectiveness relating to Rita's kids. I feel he fakes his emotion for Rita, but he really has emotions towards the children. |

I think the Thanksgiving incident was real emotion: true anger at how Trinity was treating his family (plus it was just too stupid to be anything else). I
think he truly loves his sister and Rita's kids. I think he felt some actual remorse when he killed the wrong man (the s&m artist guy). He is
definitely the coldest with Rita... But then why did he punch out the neighbor? I was looking hard for it but nothing about it indicated it was for show.
I've thought for awhile that he loves Rita but is so paranoid of her (b/c she has the most access and opportunity to see him for what he is) and so certain
he can't feel- his guard beats him to the punch.
I agree that they are setting us up for the conclusion that Dexter might have been save-able but for his father... The worst people on this show end up being the law enforcement officials (his dad the cop, last season's prosecutor) who want to take the law into their own hands and use Dexter to do it. I'm not saying Dexter isn't a total nutball (liking to kill and cut people up) but he is not 100% w/o empathy/emotion either... Although that's what he thinks he is. Remember environment supposedly had something (if not everything) to do with his mental state (his mom's death). It's not presented as an inborn condition.

Yeah, for such a kick-ass show Dexter has one of the worst opening themes I've ever heard. Visually it's great, but the music sucks.

I haven't started watching the finale, but how is it in terms of gore? Scale of 1 (little to no blood) to 5 (gore gore gore), how is the finale stacking
up? Just curious if there's any "don't look" moments.
