I'm thrilled with The Hurt Locker love. I think most people were expecting Up in the Air to take the critics awards but we'll see what New York does
tomorrow. Bigelownage is amazing <3.
And really, LAFCA? |

I am so anxious to see A Single Man. Anyone got a bootleg?

YES! at Coraline being on that list, but a big-ass WTF to The Hangover. REALLY?! Is there a large former frat-boy voting bloc amongst the AFI?
I tried finding a screener of A Single Man, but they all seem to be fakes so far. I did come across one of Precious, though, so I'll be watching that shortly. May have to get The Hurt Locker as well with its recent resurgence. |

The Hangover was fucking hilarious but I sure didn't expect it to be on any lists.

My excitement for Nine is dwindling, it seems to be getting uniformly snubbed.

I saw The Messenger today. Terrific acting and a solid movie, but overall I wasn't blown away by it. Gonna try to see Invictus tomorrow.

I'm still going to love NINE. It's the type of thing I can't help but love.

OMG <3 to Coraline and Sugar being on the AFI list. Major
Adventureland and Two Lovers keep popping up on random top tens as well so hooray for that. I'm getting annoyed that I missed seeing In the Loop when it was out. I'm a little torn on the subject of The Hurt Locker. It's very good, but I also think there were quite a few better films this year. My main issue w/ the movie was I had a hard time really connecting w/ the characters, aside from Renner. I wanted to care more about them than I did. I am following any random success of Drag Me to Hell in these things, and so far Alison Lohman was nominated for Best Actress by the Detroit Film Critics Society. I think that's it but eventually it will take over all awards just you wait. Big week...BFCA noms tomorrow (aka Critics' Choice), Golden Globes noms Tues, SAG noms on Thurs. Oh and the death of The Lovely Bones is not surprising given the critical reception, but I really thought Nine had been better received when it started screening a few weeks ago. It's starting to seem equally DOA. |

Didn't the Hurt Locker come out quite a while ago? I don't see it on any movie listings. I hope it's out on DVD before the awards.
I'm also still pumped to see NINE..with so many darker films, I just want a splash of slutty D.D.Lewis and the Bonfire Beauties! Apartment Zero: I must re-watch that film. ...eta: and I am bummed that 'The Lovely Bones' is flopping re: critics as I loved the book. Sad. It could have been such a great movie. Why Pete, why? |

spragenspelt wrote:After early reviews of Lovely Bones, many fanboys were up in arms over negative reaction, ready to lynch some of the most respectable film critics we have (got involved in the argument myself, over the Variety review... which I thought was quite a valid review). Now, it has quieted down, since the reception of the film has overall been mixed at best. It's 40% on rottentomatoes now. Nine had ONE early review that loved it. It was odd, because pundits were going on about a few great reviews, when all I could ever find was that one. Again, it does not surprise me, because, to me, Chicago was way overrated. Weird thing is, Rob Marshall is now attached to the next Pirates of the Caribbean film. Odd enough, that choice. |

I saw The Hurt Locker back in March during South By Southwest. It was very good, but I didn't get a Best Picture feel from it. I certainly wouldn't
mind watching it again though. I think the theatrical release was a few months ago. Here in Austin, it only played at the one "indie" theater.

spragenspelt wrote:Funny because I felt the exact opposite. Part of the reason The Hurt Locker was so amazing to me was because it wasn't like the other boring, contrived war films from this decade. It really wasn't even much of a war movie at times. It was a character study and the connection to the characters is why I think Bigelow is the best director of the year. She understands the emotions of her characters, and she does it better than any male director has done in a war film which is totally hilarious in a way. And btw Wills4everEH, it comes out on DVD in early or mid January, which is actually way before the nominations are even announced this year.
