Remove this ad name three other instances when two duplicates of the same character were right next to each other - one instance from season 3, one from season 5 and one from season 7. Willow/Vampire Willow (Dopplegangland) Buffy/Buffybot (Intervention) Buffy/The First (Chosen) Exactly what I had in mind. I guess that puts you in the lead, and it requires some serious title update. Its surprising to me how many of the episodes I don't remember considering this is one of my all time favorite shows. I mean the later seasons are all kind of a blur but I love love love Season 1-3 and 5. Probably as much as you can love television and still be relatively normal. And yet I don't remember much about the Replacement. I often discover that the way I watch a season (or a movie for that matter) the first time, completely influences the way I think about that season, no matter how many times I rewatch it. If I'm open to new things at the time, the season usually takes my full attention and is very vivid in my mind. If I'm bothered by other things, though, or if I happened to watch a whole lot of TV lately, everything about the season is vague and blurry afterwards.

I'm planning to throw in a top 10 list and a bottom 10 list of Angel episodes in this thread, but it won't be as thorrow as this list, so it shouldn't prevent you from doing one of your own. As long as you'll follow mine religiously, of course. :)

Chloe commits suicide, Willow goes momentarily bad, Kennedy thinks someone gives a crap about her feelings, Wood gets invited into the house because there are not enough people already in it, Andrew tries to bake a cake, a demon comes after Anya, Spike fights a demon, Buffy gets tied up by shadow men, and some ubervamps are having a party with some of their ubervamp friends in a cave somewhere. Like many episodes in season 7, this episode doesn't really have a unique and distinguished plot, and instead it just sort of blends with the rest of the season. The upside of this pattern is that season arcs rock and they're mostly much preferable to standalones. The downside is that this season's arc generally sucks, and so the entire middle of the season turns into one long stretch of "where is this going exactly?". "Get It Done" is a prime example of that pattern. That's why it's hard for me to write about this episode: it doesn't have a special tone that sets it apart from the episodes preceding and following it. It's the same old bleak Summers house, with the same old assortment of family, friends, guests, hostages and potentials, all leaving under the same roof and talking about The First and the upcoming battle. Most of the episode doesn't bring anything new to the table in that respect, and no, Kennedy being afraid of Willow's powers or Anya getting attacked again or Spike killing a demon do not qualify as something new. The only parts of the episode that were noteworthy and that deserve any sort of discussion are as following: Chloe killing herself. Most of you will agree with me on this one: one of the biggest problems of this season is the introduction of thousands of faceless and personality-free characters (A.K.A.the potential slayers). However, Chloe killing herself was one of the only moments that really made it look like the potentials are not a colossal waste of space, but rather a group of lost girls on whom faith has laid a burden they can't always handle. It made things "realer", even if for only a moment. Buffy being a Dick. Buffy's speech after the Chloe incident was low, it was harsh, it was hurtful, it was inconsiderate and it was logically lacking. It was uncomfortable and frustrating to watch, mainly because the build-up up to that point left a lot to be desired, but also because that whole "Buffy is a detached bitch because she thinks she can win the battle this way" subplot shouldn't have been the show's closing storyline in the first place, or at least not the way it was handled. But I have to give them props - it did evoke strong emotions in me, such as annoyance and anger. I guess kudos for them if this is what they were aiming for. The Slayer origins are revealed, somewhat. Let me make this clear. The way they chose to reveal the slayer's origins here was uneventful and anticlimactic. But, and that's a big but (but not as big a butt as Samoa's Russell's - and not as shit-stained), the concept itself, I think, is not only brilliant but I'm sure is pre-planned and stands at the core of the show. The concept that all the rules the show was based on (only one slayer is eligible to fight the forces of evil each time) were made up by some stupid old men, is mind-blowingly excellent. I'll elaborate on that in the "Chosen" write-up, but it made perfect sense and was a worthy storyline for the last season of the show. Oh, if it only wasn't surrounded by such stench. Overall, and thanks to the points I've mentioned above, "Get it Done" gets it done (get it? [I'm done.]) more than most season 7 episodes. It's more fast-paced, and a respectable amount of stuff happens that mostly distracts us from the sad truth: a slightly-better typical season 7 episode is still, in the end of the day, a typical season 7 episode. High point: the finding-Chloe-dead scene was efficiently cruel. And Andrew's big board is worth mentioning. And the cliffhanger was cliffangery enough. Low point: the scene that came afterwards, with Buffy lecturing everybody on how much they suck, was needlessly cruel. Quality Quote: PRINCIPAL WOOD: So, you hold [Andrew] here against his will? BUFFY: Well, he was evil, and people got killed, and now he...bakes. It's a thing. Riddle: As far as I can remember, this is the only successful suicide attempt in the show. However, name three other failed ones (one from season 3, one from season 7, and one from 'Angel' season 2). Plus, name a staged fake suicide from season 1. Room for Debate: was Buffy's harsh approach for rallying her troops a reasonable one? Was she justified in trying to give them a wake-up call, or was she going about it the wring way? Spoiler [+] She was going about it the wrong way.

The fact that the entire Slayer mythology has rape subtexts is an interesting subversion of the feminist message that was presented through the course of the series; the fact that woman can be strong, but that their strength comes from men is jarring for longtime viewers as well as new viewers who are just watching all the emphasis placed on girls becoming chosen and, I think, helps to make the climax of Chosen that much more far-reaching (even if Buffy ended up doing the same thing that the shadow men did so many years ago). Riddle: As far as I can remember, this is the only successful suicide attempt in the show. However, name three other failed ones (one from season 3, one from season 7, and one from 'Angel' season 2). Plus, name a staged fake suicide from season 1. Oh, the things that could have been. About the riddle: Kate and the "I Robot, You Jane" guy were what I had in mind, but Jonathan and Spike I have to admit I didn't think about (was Spike's truly a suicide attempt, though, or was it just an act of masochism?). But of course it's good enough to earn you a point. I was thinking about Angel in "Amends" and stupid melodramatic Dawn in "Him". About Buffy committing suicide in "The Gift" - I agree with you completely that she wanted out, however I think her conscience would have never let her just point a gun to her head. She was awaiting an opportunity where she could say to herself that her sacrifice is absolutely essential, and in that aspect, it wasn't so much as a suicide as a totally convenient act of heroism She was, after all, going to die with the rest of the world anyway if it wasn't for that act...

If I were to review this (slightly) revamped thread, I'd say that it has matured a bit with the more cynical opening summaries and new "room for debate" heading. <3 so much! Dawn trying to kill herself in Him was so lame. I don't think a single person was able to relate to whatever the heck she was trying to accomplish. For me, Buffy's death in The Gift was always a little of both; a suicide and a selfless sacrifice. That moment in The Gift was so awesome because it drew back to many other instances in Buffy's life, both personal and as the slayer. My interpretation was that it was the one moment in Buffy's life where her calling as the slayer and what she needed emotionally meshed perfectly. In the concluding arcs of the first 3 seasons, Buffy had to relinquish her innocence, choose duty over affection and compromise her morals (in that order). Though those trials may have toughened her as the slayer, it was always portrayed that they took a little out of who she was as a person. Already feeling overwhelmed by her Mom's death and her subsequent parental duties by the time we got to The Gift; I'm sure Buffy, just like the viewing audience, expected yet another sacrifice to be demanded of her in the fight against Glory. In fact, the final couple of episodes in the season were building up to Buffy having to let Dawn die to save everyone else. However, in a rare moment where fate was kind to her, Buffy's role as the slayer called upon her to do the one thing she was most comfortable with... to die. That's where I believe "The Gift" has special significance, her death was both a gift to Buffy herself as well as the world she has sworn to protect. Personally, I felt extremely moved that Buffy's calling finally gave something back to her and allowed her to satisfy her own needs, guilt-free. I can see why The Gift was originally meant to be the last episode of the series. This is why the season 6 arc always felt natural to me though many people hated it. Ooh, I love me some detailed responses:) I mostly agree, although I think it needs to be made clear that Buffy did not have a death wish until the last couple of weeks of season 5, where she was feeling both suffucated by her duty and devestated by her mother's death and by what she could lose to Glory. Because of those things everything else seemed impossible and unbearable to her. The deep depression she fell to in season 6 is already there by the end of season 5, as evidenced by the dream sequences in "The Weight Of The World" and by her and Giles' conversation in "The Gift". And thanks for the (sort of) compliment! I'm still trying to find the right format for these entries. I'm thinking of maybe making them shorter, writing a paragraph or two on each episode instead of a wall of text. Would that be more inviting to read and comment on, or should I keep writing short novels?

Also, I'm running out of riddles, so from now on I'm gonna be posting rhyming a clue for the next episode each time. My 53rd favorite Buffy episode of all time: Season 2, episodes 9-10 Written by Howard Gordon and Marty Noxon A new slayer comes to town and Drusilla returns to full strengths. Because this isn't enough material for a two-hour special, some assassins are thrown in to stall. Why it's not higher: Buffy's dilemmas (I wanna have a normal life) are simplified, are represented by suspiciously-convenient external happenings (career week, Kendra as Buffy's perfect opposite), and in the end have a simplified conclusion ("it's not a job it's who you are!" "O.K.") The "scary" parts come with "scary" music, the "moving" parts come with "moving" dialogue and a "moving "score", and all in all, it's a little too high-school comedy extravaganza and not enough of a sophisticated subtle genre-crossing masterpiece. In short, it's an early 'Buffy' episode, which means it still suffers from growing pains (which go away almost completely in "Innocence"). The show is still trying to find its groove. There was a definite "quest" feel to the whole thing (there's a book that holds all our answers but it's not readable but there's a cross that can decode it but now we need the sire and we need to get rid of the slayer so we'll sends assassins one after the other and let's also throw Kendra and Willy in there too to make things more interesting) that in my eyes is less preferable to a simple, coherent, rich plot. Some things are not really thought through, like Angel sweating when in direct sunlight instead of bursting into flame (?!), and the Order of Taraka just not coming after Buffy anymore even though they were supposed to keep on coming and coming until mission accomplished. And why did the Scoobies just leave Spike and Drusilla there instead of making sure they were dead? And why was Buffy waiting for the decipherer to walk out of the tomb, instead of just dusting him right away? The punch-line she used on him wasn't even that good! Why it's not lower: The more "raw" and inexperienced 'Buffy' episodes are, the more charming I find them. The episode truly possesses a certain magic the first few seasons had, which the later seasons could never recreate. If you want to make someone understand the "feel" of the first twenty or so episodes of 'Buffy', this is definitely the one you should show them. All the characters here (Buffy, Xander, Willow, Giles, Oz, Cordelia, Drusilla, Spike, Kendra, and to a lesser extent Angel) are sympathetic and rootable. They all have something to do and an opportunity to have an impact. The episodes really advance the plot and the relationship between the characters, be it Oz\Willow, Xander\Cordelia, Buffy\Angel, or Spike\Drusilla\Angel. Overall: As the show's first two-parter, not including the premiere, "What's My Line" makes the Buffyverse bigger, more epic and saga-like. However, it's an early episode, which means a lot of charm, but it's also a lot less professional and focused, often wading in shallow waters. Best parts: Drusilla's antics; Xander continuing to hose Cordelia even after she's out of danger; Oz's monkey pants explanation; Buffy sneaking up on Angel for a change (with Mr. Gordo in his hands, no less). Worst parts: After Giles explains about the Order of Taraka and how dangerous it is, Buffy is alone and scared in school and then on the street, accompanied by overacting and cheesy music. Truly horrific few minutes of television. And Buffy's "nobody messes with my boyfriend" bit we all could have done without. Quality Quotes: CORDELIA: Oh, here I am. 'Personal shopper or motivational speaker.' Neato! XANDER: Motivational speaker? On what? Ten ways to a more annoying you? BUFFY: Mom's in L.A. till Thursday. Art buying, or something. ANGEL: Then why'd you come in through the window? BUFFY: Habit. ANGEL: Well, what is it then? BUFFY: It's nothing. Uh, we're having this thing at school. ANGEL: Career week? BUFFY: How did you know? ANGEL: I lurk. KENDRA: She died? BUFFY (defensively): Just a little! Room for debate: What is really going on between Xander and Cordelia? Is it just the thrill and the heat between two people who can't stand each other, or is there mutual respect there? Why is Cordelia even open to this kind of person when she tries to come off as someone who would never go that route? A (rhyming) Clue for the next episode: An eye, A spy, And the vamp goes bye-bye.

Remove this ad Anyway, I agree with your main point about What's My Line. Kendra and the career week were such clear set-ups for the "who am I, really" theme. The idea of Buffy retiring (in this episode, because she could have passed on her duties to Kendra) should have been followed up on more. The episode(s) do provide relevant set up for the finale though. I honestly think the Xander and Cordelia thing was written just so that Cordelia could have something to do. She had been fairly one-note up till this point and her character really needed some development. Though it wasn't completely in character for her to get it on with Xander, it wasn't exactly that far a stretch either. I think she went into it for the same reason she kept helping the scoobies. Be it boredom, acceptance or a genuine desire to help.

I feel like with Cordelia and Xander it was all about hormones. I think Cordelia initially just liked Xander because he was there during the scary stuff, and also because he was kind of dangerous for her because she was risking her reputation. For Xander Cordelia was always unattainable and obviously gorgeous. I do think Cordelia developed real feelings for Xander tho. At least more real than any of the superficial relationships she had with any of her other peers.

I think that by the end of the first season, Cordelia has gone through a crucial change in her attitude, but she was scared of that change so she continued her bratty attitude on the outside. I mean, she was still tactless and up-front, but she didn't put popularity and beauty on a pedestal anymore, realizing that stuff like courage and loyalty [/Disney values] are a lot more important. But it was like a dirty secret to her; nobody could know that she's turning into the losers she's supposed to despise. That's why she's keeping up appearances while doing the exact opposite of what you would expect of her to do. I also think Xander acknowledges that change, even if he has the decency not to talk about it out loud.

Posts: 171 (12/14/09 03:18 PM) Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts	My 52nd least favorite Buffy episode of all time: Season 7, episode 11 Written by David Fury The entire cast decides to spice things up a little, so they all hang out at Buffy's house and get nervous together about things to come. The weird thing about doing this list is that you get to watch the episodes out of sequence. The downside of that is you don't get a lot of the context and small innuendos, because you're not immersed in where the story and the characters are at that exact time. The upside is, you get to appreciate the episode for what it is without being already frustrated by the recurring problems of the season in question. In this case, I found that if I overlook the repetitiveness of the season 7 narrative and focus solely on what I'm watching at the moment, "Showtime" tells a coherent and complete story about how to deal with a fear that is seemingly too big to deal with. If I hadn't known that nothing is actually accomplished in this episode, that the potentials go back to be whiny scared little brats and Buffy goes back to being clueless as a leader, I would have thought that all the characters involved here have made a huge step in the right direction. But in the end, you can't overlook the context. The rest of season 7 did happen, and the same basic mistakes (made by the characters and the writers) occurred time and time again, making the progress achieved in this episode essentially pointless. And I haven't even mentioned the problems in the episode itself, like how all the potentials are unbearable ungrateful little scumbags, so much that Kennedy comes off as a kind and gracious human being by comparison; like how the Anya and Giles airtime, while answering why exactly the First chose to attack just now, had no point whatsoever or a justified reason to even be in the episode; like how the ubervamp morphed in a second from being unbeatable to being an equal foe to Buffy; and like how Buffy, Xander and Willow's "plan" worked perfectly by miraculously predicting the ubervamp's every move. I will not mention those problems, because that's not the point. The point is, if you're going to watch this episode, watch it out of sequence, and imagine that it isn't surrounded by many other episodes that basically ignore anything that happens in it. Best parts: Andrew was the breaking star of the episode. My favorite scene of his was when he removed his feet from the couch and cleaned after himself when Buffy entered the house, thinking she even notices he exists. And the final Buffy vs. ubervamp showdown was kinda epic, no matter how unimportant it turned out to be. Worst parts: The constant whining of the potentials was painful, and the scenes with Spike in the cave were, I hate to admit it, kinda boring. Quality Quotes: RONA (about Andrew): Um... why is that guy tied to a chair? XANDER: The question you'll soon be asking is, "Why isn't he gagged?" ANYA: We just happened to be invited to the same massacre, and you hit on me after I had a few... TORG: I remember, you wore pink. ANYA: Those were entrails. MOLLY: I'm a bit peckish meself. (exits) RONA: (to Anya) Bit what as well? ANYA: That's English for "hungry." RONA: (to herself) Oh, here I thought "hungry" was English for "hungry." A (rhyming) Clue for the next episode: An urn, A return Watch everything burn.

So I actually remember nothing about most of the episodes except the stand-out ones like when Anya becomes a demon again and the conversations with dead people. But yeah, this just reminded me, it was totally lame how the ubervamps were sooooo powerful and then in the finale when they go in the hellmouth there's like a million of them and even Xander and Dawn can kill them.

Just like Never Leave Me, Bring On The Night, First Date (especially) and Get It Done; it kinda fades into the formless storytelling that was the middle of season 7. I honestly don't have anything to say about Showtime. I think everything it was trying to achieve was spelt out pretty clearly in the episode itself. You're right though, what was up with the ubervamp? To be fair, the vamp in Showtime was conceiveably on par with the one in Bring On The Night. Buffy was just in a better mindset and was able to beat it. WTF was up with those pussies in the last few episodes of the season though? Andrew and Dawn could fight them! They should have at least mentioned that the first ubervamp was some sort of leader or something.

I think it was just convenient for the writers to make the vamps beatable when they needed them to be. In the meantime: My 52nd favorite Buffy episode of all time: Season 6, episodes 1-2 Written by David Fury and Marty Noxon In a twist like never before, the crew of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' makes a controversial decision to not continue the show without the person whose name appears in the title. Minds are blown away everywhere. Some episodes in BtVS are creative experiments, made to see how much the writers can stretch the boundaries, how much they can get away with, how much they can play with the rules of conventional television. I'm in the opinion that most of the show's sixth season fall in that category. But if every episode would be like that, then there wouldn't be any show left. Some episodes need to get the plot going, so that later the plot could be a basis for things to go wacky. And I can't think of a single episode that needed to set the story up as much as "Bargaining" did. To make my point clear, let's just take a look at the previous season premiers. Sure, "When I Was Bad" established that Buffy needs to deal with having been dead for 30 seconds. Sure, "Anne" established that Buffy needs to deal with having killed her lover for the greater good. Sure, "The Freshman" established that Buffy needs to deal with going to college. Sure, "Buffy VS. Dracula" established that Buffy has a dark side and an imaginary sister. But no other season premiere had the star of the show dead, and than brought back to life by her friends, than her having to deal with said resurrection. I would argue that besides "Welcome to The Hellmouth" and "The Harvest", this two-parter had the most exposition and explaining to do out of any single episode in the show's history and future. I lingered on the fact that this is a set-up episode, because I thought that for a set-up episode, it managed to be so much more than just a set-up episode. It was refreshing and moving simultaneously to see what kind of world the Scoobies had built for themselves in the absence of their heroine. It was disturbing and intriguing simultaneously to watch the fundamental change Willow has gone through, the change that would eventually lead to veins and black hair. It was worrying and exciting simultaneously to see Buffy back in action, but thinking she's in some kind of a hellish parallel universe that only vaguely resembles Sunnydale. But the most important thing this episode had that separates it from other set-up episodes is atmosphere. A dark and eerie one, and every burning building and unstable tower and torn-up bot and thrown-up snake left me with the same sinking sensation: It's a huge mistake to bring Buffy back from the dead, but it's one of those things that just need to be done. An unnerving feeling of they're-trying-to-make-it-right-but-it-came-out-all-wrong that I'm sure the writers were going for. Best parts: The Buffybot, the Buffybot and her one-liners, Dawn entering the Buffybot's bed at night for cold comfort. And Willow killing the little Bambi was a perfect scene. Worst parts: The episodes' villains were kinda lame. I understand the need to turn Sunnydale into a burning hell, but I wouldn't have chosen bikers to get it done. For you South Park viewers out there, weren't they just the worst kind of faggots? Quality Quote: SPIKE: Oh, poor Watcher. Did your life pass before your eyes? Posts: 2033 (12/15/09 04:59 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	I think Bargaining is probably my favourite season opener episode(s), but It's also pretty depressing to me as I love the Buffybot so much, and it's hard to see it killed I'm torn on the general season 6 plot too. While I was happy to see the series continue, and I think the series handled the question of dying and being torn out of heaven pretty darn well, the season is generally to depressing for me. I like the show when it's more fun and upbeat, plus I think a lot of people are acting way out of character. I can handle a couple of negative episodes here and there, but the season is generally miserable. I have a hard time enjoying episodes like Hell's Bells and Seeing Red. The season has some great episodes though, like Tabula Rasa, OMWF and Grave, and while I like the season I still think it could have been so much better.

Remove this ad This was the first season on UPN and I was not a fan of the switch, mainly because I felt like the show LOOKED different somehow. I don't know if it's because UPN broadcasted or filmed with lower quality somehow or what but something was different about it. I felt the same way about Roswell after it moved too. Ignoring that though I...kind of liked it? That entire season was really a downer.
