What exactly did she do to deserve being murdered? Besides Shannon (which really was an accident), did she ever kill someone in a situation where she wasn't protecting herself or someone else? Am I forgetting something?
I know she killed the asshole who shot her and caused her to lose her baby...
If we go with that line of thinking, then Sawyer, Sayid and Kate deserve to be "put down", too.

Ana was harboring way too much anger and she was unstable and unpredictable and unrepentant for those she killed. She killed the guy who shot her, even though he was apprehended AND admitted to the crime and was going to be put away probably for good, since cop shooters are treated very harshly. Ana also threw Nathan into the pit and was ready to torture and kill him. Ana threw Sawyer, Michael & Jin into the pit. Ana was a gun happy angry person who would always shoot first and ask questions later.

I would have loved to have seen Kate die at the hands of smokey, but she obviously was repentant for the crime she committed and she killed her father to protect her mother. Her childhood friend's death was an accident and not really her fault, but she feels guilt about it. Kate beats herself up every day for what she did and isn't quick to the trigger.

Sawyer killed the man he was told was the one who caused the deaths of his parents. Yes, it was wrong, but again you could clearly see that Sawyer was repentant about it and hated himself for killing the wrong man. The only person Sawyer had intent to kill was the con man (later discovered to be Locke's father).

Sayid killed/totured during wartime scenarios and very obviously was repentant about his past and felt guilt about times he had to torture people he felt undeserving of it. Sayid showed how much better he was than Ana by not doing anything in retaliation to Ana after she shot Shannon. If the roles were reversed and Sayid accidently killed someone Ana loved, there is not a doubt in my mind that Ana would have gone Dirty Harry on Sayid and killed him.

So, I see Ana Lucia as a totally different animal as compared to the Kates/Sayids/Sawyers of the island. It's all about the intent in their hearts and souls.
