He was really good in a (FINALLY) harder hitting hip hop from NappyTabs.
I didn't even notice Kathryn.

Yeesh, that went by fast. It feels like nothing really happened. And NO SOLOS? This, combined with the 6 person finale, means that Jakob and and Kathryn had
only done two different solos the entire competition (Russel has done three). and Ashleigh has only done ONE! That's ridiculous.

2nd best hip hop of the seasonWhat was the first? I totally missed the show. I thought it was 2 hours and I would catch the second half. Any recs. on what I should YouTube later? I don't want to watch the whole thing. Just 3 or 4 dances. |

Unless they get choreographers to help the dancers with their solos, I don't want to see any.

That Tyce Broadway was so fucking shitty. The second half was Jakob and Ellenore just randomly doing jumps and spins without any regard to the other. A lot of
people hate Nappy Tabs, but Tyce is hands down the consistently worst choreographer on the show.
Jakob + Kathryn + Desmond Richardson? I actually paused the DVR so I could savor the moment before hitting play. It was really good and easily the best of the night, but it wasn't the dancegasm I was prepping myself for. Kathryn & Ryan's samba was also pretty hot shit, but I was expecting more hip action from Kathryn. Still, that was a great piece of choreo from Gilkison, and that last trick was fantastic. It's too bad they didn't close the show with it. Ashley didn't do jack shit in her Sonya piece. I was laughing from the get go that she kind of just stood around like Cedric while Russell was doing a yeoman job with the repeoire of Sonya moves. Like, whatever. Russell was later helped by some practically bulletproof choreography from Jason Gilkison -- I don't think anyone could have fucked up that Paso and Russell was very lucky to get it. Ryan & Ellenore's contemp piece was too avant garde for the program. You could tell Nigel just hated the choreography. Ashley sucks. Jakob/Kathryn >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Russell. Yet Russell will probably win. Worst. Winner. Ever. It would have been hysterical if Russell hurt himself, didn't dance, and then win anyway. Because that could have happened. I'd pick Kathryn over Jakob, but that's just personal preference. Ellenore is a close third, and the others aren't even close. Ryan and Ashley shouldn't even be in the top 20. |

The pace of the show was really awful. When you don't have the time to let a performance sink in and reflect on it, it detracts from the overall
experience. That said, most performances came off well for me. No major mistakes, but very few breakout performances.
Really, only one dance stood out above the rest for me, and that was Ryan and Ashleigh's piece. It was really passionate and entertaining to watch. I was really impressed by Ash's commitment when she jumped backwards, and was caught by Ryan before landing on her ass. I thought it was a bit unfair that her dance with Russell was really just a Russell showcase, and she really wasn't given any moments to stand out. And while I appreciated Kathryn and Jakob's piece, I didn't think it was a show-stopper like the judges did. Probably because I've come to expect them to own the stage. I did like the numerous throwing of the bodies onto one another, but it didn't stick as strongly with me as Ryan and Ash's. Same thing with LNO - she's so consistently professional, that you just don't notice anymore. She needed something that made people's eyes pop out, and I suppose the Samba was supposed to be that for her, but it didn't linger for me. I dunno. They all have worked their asses off and delivered... I don't think I'd be surprised no matter who won. Well, maybe Ryan would be a surprise, but not Ashleigh. I think she could pull some significant underdog votes. I agree that it's probably down to Kathryn or Russell. Kathryn should win it. She deserves it. Wouldn't be surprised to see Ashleigh in the F4. |

RYAN & KATHRYN - Samba - I love Kathryn, but I didn't love her in this dance. The slow beginning just
allowed several slight catches to show through. When the dance got going, I found Ryan much more connected and natural in this style. It was good, but not
great.
JAKOB & ELLENORE - Broadway - Broadway-style dancing actually allows Jakob's exaggerated movement to come across better, so I thought this was a good style for him. Ellenore is PERFECT for Fosse, with her clean precision and her penchant for odd body angles. I liked it a lot. RUSSELL & ASHLEIGH - Contemporary - The biggest problem with this dance was a notable lack of chemistry between these two dancers (makes me glad that Ashleigh couldn't dance with him last week). Russell was pretty good, but not nearly as good as the judges said. Ashleigh wasn't bad, either, although she had a lot of truncated lines with her arms, especially later in the piece. Overall, though, I would have been fine with both individual performances if they played off of one another better. Another one that was just okay. ELLENORE & RYAN - Jazz - This choreographer is really smart. While he was clearly choreographing to Ellenore's strengths, what he did also masked Ryan's most long-standing weakness (stiffness in the upper body) brilliantly. I was a little disappointed that it seemed so much less challenging than much of what we are seeing at this point, and I can't believe how incredibly little of that big stage they actually covered. None of that is the dancers' fault, though. ASHLEIGH & JAKOB - Foxtrot - I often like the ballroom numbers more than many, but I found this one pretty boring. I think that's because Ashleigh and Jakob as individuals are a little boring, and they need something more flashy to showcase themselves. From a dance perspective, I think what was missing for me was a bit of resistance. Ballroom works largely from the tension of two bodies being held apart by a rigid frame. In this dance, there was no particular force pushing them together or holding them apart. ELLENORE & RUSSELL - Paso Doble - Russell definitely performed the paso better than Legacy on a technical level, but he didn't come close to what Legacy did on a performance level. The intensity in the eyes just wasn't there. As a result, he got very pose-y. The movements between poses were strong, but the poses themselves felt static because there was no internal fire maintaining the tension. Ellenore was sensational, and unlike Kathryn when she did this style with Legacy, I was able to watch Ellenore because the dance wasn't DOMINATED by her partner... JAKOB & KATHRYN - Contemporary - In my opinion, Kathryn pulled off an impossible feat, here. She brought out a convincing semblance of heterosexual lust in Jakob! She must be a sexy, sexy dancer if she can do that! I actually thought that she was more impressive than him, here, even on a technical level. Her movements felt more controlled and stronger, while he weakened his core in a few places and looked too rubbery. I don't think this piece was as emotionally swoon-worthy as the judges seemed to think, but I was very impressed. RYAN & ASHLEIGH - Contemporary - It was great to see these two work together, particularly on a night when everybody did some variation of contemporary dance. It really allowed us to see the limitations that keep these two from being as good as the other four. I have always commented on Ryan's lack of flexibility and extension, but Ashleigh has the same deficiency. And you could really see how much less exerting the choreography was than what Travis has given to ANY other couple he's worked with - I will posit it was because these two simply couldn't pull it off. All that being said, I thought that Ashleigh connected MUCH better with her husband than with any other partner she's had, and it was a pleasure to see her beam with sincere adoration. Ryan kind of remained showy and cold to me, but perhaps I just missed his connection… RUSSELL & KATHRYN - Hip Hop - It must be a result of several seasons of seriously sub-par hip hop dancing that this routine received the raves it did. Yeah, it was okay and both of them got a nice swagger going. However, they weren't in synch AT ALL throughout the dance. Before I can rave about a dance like this, the execution has got to be TIGHT. Routine Rankings: 1. KATHRYN & JAKOB - Contemporary 2. ELLENORE & JAKOB - Broadway 3. RUSSELL & ASHLEIGH - Contemporary 4. ELLENORE & RUSSELL - Paso Doble 5. RUSSELL & KATHRYN - Hip Hop 6. RYAN & KATHRYN - Samba 7. ELLENORE & RYAN - Jazz 8. ASHLEIGH & JAKOB - Foxtrot 9. ASHLEIGH & RYAN - Contemporary Individual Rankings: 1. ELLENORE (I like Kathryn more overall, but tonight, I think Ellenore did a little better) 2. KATHRYN 3. JAKOB 4. RUSSELL 5. ASHLEIGH 6. RYAN |

Agree about the pacing. Too many finalists and it just seemed so rushed. I really want Jakob to win, but I think Kathryn will take it.

Wtf was Nigel talking about when he said Ashleigh had more chemistry with Jakob? That is fucking ridiculous. Jakob is void of any personality, he is all
tehnique.
If I'm ranking for tonight: 1. Russell/Kathryn: Hip Hop 2. Ashleigh/Ryan: Contemporary 3. Kathryn/Jakob: Contemporary 4. Kathryn/Ryan: Samba [HUGE GAP] 5. Ellenore/Russell: Paso 6. Ashleigh/Russell: Lyrical Jazz 7. Ashleigh/Jakob: Boretrot 8. Ellenore/Ryan: Robot shit 9. Jakob/Ellenore: wtf did they even do? Kathryn BY FAR had the best dances tonight. I think she could win but since there was like zero judges manipulation, it is open and I think Russell will probably win. She will be top 2 though. I was hoping her dance with Jakob would have been WAY better. It was good but the tears weren't necessary. My prediction: 1. Russell 2. Kathryn 3. Jakob 4. Ashleigh 5. Ryan 6. Ellenore |

Say what you will about the DiLellos (they're my number 5 and 6 out of this bunch), but their dance together was one of the highlights for me, if only
because there was real emotion packed in there. It doesn't mask the easy choreography, but I appreciate the dance nonetheless.
My favorite dances were two of Kathryn's- the hip-hop with Russell and the contemporary with Jakob, though the latter had some bobbles, I thought. I want Jakob, Kathryn, or Ellenore to win and I could deal if Russell wins (I find him a little underwhelming). Just no DiLellos in the top 3. Kthxbye. |
