Robert G. Heft, credited with designing, sewing first 50-star American flag, dies at 67Wakeman Funeral Home says Heft died Saturday at a hospital in Saginaw. A cause of death wasn't immediately available. Heft made the flag in 1958 as part of a high school history project in Lancaster, Ohio. He spent more than 12 hours sewing the design on his mother's Singer sewing machine. President Dwight D. Eisenhower chose Heft's design to replace the 48-star flag. Born in Saginaw, Heft left Michigan after his parents separated when he was about a year old. He returned after retiring from Northwest State Community College in Archbold, Ohio, where he was a professor. Heft's death was first reported by WSGW-AM in Saginaw. |

Alan A'Court, former Liverpool winger, diesFormer Liverpool and England winger Alan A'Court has died at the age of 75 following an illness.A'Court signed for the club by manager Don Welsh and later worked with Phil Taylor before Bill Shankly's arrival at Anfield 50 years ago this week. The winger became the first player to score a competitive goal under Shankly.A'Court, who featured for Walter Winterbottom's England at the 1958 World Cup, was admired as a forceful winger and he scored 63 goals in 381 appearances over 11 years at Anfield as the club fought to climb out of the old Second Division. He was sidelined by injury for the whole of the 1963-64 championship winning season and he was sold to Tranmere Rovers for £4,500 in October 1964. His last outing in a Liverpool shirt was in their first European match at Anfield, a 6-1 victory over the Icelandic side KR, on Sept 14, 1964. "It's extremely sad news and everyone at the club is deeply saddened," former Liverpool player Brian Hall said. "We knew he had not been well, but we did not realise how serious it was. He was a terrific footballer and a lovely guy. "It is a real shock because I only saw him three or four months ago. Everyone at the club would like to pass on their sympathies to Alma and his family at this sad time." |

I think I picked Oral Roberts in 2008, but changed to Billy Graham in 2009. Maybe i'll switch to Louis Farrakhan in 2010.

Roy E. Disney leaves mark on sailing including record-setting Transpac winLOS ANGELES (AP) - Roy E. Disney, who died Wednesday at 79, was an avid ocean sailor who won the California-to-Hawaii Transpacific Yacht Race in record time a decade ago and backed programs to bring youth to the sport. "He was very competitive, but we always had a lot of fun on the boat," said Gregg Hedrick, who managed Disney's boats and sailed 100,000 miles with him over 24 years. "We always had the best sailors on the boat and that was what made it fun 'cause he was such a good sailor and he could hold his own with any of them." The nephew of Walt Disney competed 15 times in the Transpac, a 2,225-mile race that begins off Los Angeles and ends off Oahu's Diamond Head. Hedrick said Disney was a sportsman "but you knew when it was a competitive moment on the boat ... and we all worked really hard, you'd all work a lot harder for Roy because you wanted to see him win." In 1999, his 74-foot Pyewacket III was first to finish, completing the voyage in seven days, 11 hours, 41 minutes and 27 seconds. That broke the record of 7:15:24:40 set in 1997 by his son, Roy Pat Disney, who took over the job of skippering Pyewacket II after his father broke a leg and was unable to sail. "Sheer pandemonium," Hedrick said of the 1999 victory. "We were coming down that Molokai Channel doing 25 knots in that boat and we had a big puff hit right at the buoy and the (speedometer) was reading like 28, and everybody was screaming and the cameras were flashing." The record stood until 2007. Another new record was set this year. Disney last sailed in the biennial Transpac in 2005. He planned to sail in 2007 but changed his mind just before the race began and turned his boat over to his son. Transpac spokesman Rich Roberts said the surprise decision involved a project that Disney and wife Leslie DeMeuse-Disney were working on to train a team of young sailors to compete on their own in that Transpac. The project drew more than 500 applicants in their late teens and early 20s. After a long period of training, 11 were selected to crew a boat named Morning Light. Disney said at the time that he had become concerned about trying to follow Morning Light's progress and sail his own boat at the same time. "I've been apprehensive about it, and when you're worried, maybe it's not the smart thing to do," he said. A documentary called "Morning Light" was released in 2008. Roberts said that on Wednesday, he received word that a member of that crew, Genny Tulloch, who has gone on to world class racing, had just learned she was a nominee for a woman-of-the-year award presented by U.S. Sailing sponsor Rolex. "She's the first one out of that Morning Light group to be nominated for that," he said. U.S. Sailing said in a statement that Disney made an impact on the sport from youth sailing to the Olympic level and beyond. |

Hazel Hawke,James Garner and Maggie Smith are good bets if your going with a ballot of oldies.
If you want to pick a younger crop I would stay away from people like Amy Winehouse and Lindsay Lohan who cycle in and out of rehab. They have too many people propping them up and leeching off them to die. I would go the route of a Suicidal Singer possiblly of the Heavy Metal or Emo variety. |
