CBS should be announcing which show gets the post-Super Bowl slot soon. I'm kind of surprised they haven't already. I guess it's not an easy decision this year.

The longer they wait, the better Survivor's chances of getting it--a scripted show would need to be informed in advance to create a special episode, and even if CBS didn't announce it publicly, it would inevitably leak out.

Lol, if Survivor does get the spot, you just know they'll promote the fuck out of Jerri, Colby, Poopert, and Russell (maybe Sandra) and ignore everyone else.

Not to mention the fact that HvV hasn't been revealed thus they CAN'T announce it yet helps them. In other words, they are probably waiting for them to announce that they are doing another all-stars for them to reveal that it will be the superbowl special, if it is?

Anyone else remember when All-Stars was debuting after that last Super Bowl? I swear in the Super Bowl postgame they were telling everybody that the premiere of Survivor All-Stars was coming up next every 3 seconds. I know a few non-Survivor fans who bitched about this effusively.

Wonder if it'll happen again....

I don't know why people here are so gung ho on S20 premier following the Super Bowl. It means squat relative to how much longer Survivor remains on the air. And the move could backfire. CBS could get disappointed if the HvV premier does not retain as many of the Super Bowl viewers as it expects. If the game runs very long, many people will just set it up to record it on Tivo which defeats the purpose of the special programming. It may also not look good if there is a significant drop off in the ratings once it returns to its regular Thursday slot.

All the networks do this to appease their west coast outlets and the expense of the other time zones since out West there is still a significant amount of prime time remaining after the game ends. Frankly, after watching TV for 4+ hours straight I get burnt out from watching. I recorded the All Stars and Outback premieres and really didn't get into them until I rewatched the episodes.

I honestly don't think Survivor will get the post-Super Bowl slot again, but I guess ya never know. Maybe they're waiting until the Samoa finale when they announce the next season?

I remember ASS didn't even get a preview during the Pearl Islands finale, just a quick mention at the very end by Jeff saying that the show would be back with our favorite past contestants. Did he say then that the show would be premiering after the Super Bowl?

The article explains the reasoning behind why they think Survivor will get it, the main reason being that CBS is pretty much out-of-time to have any of their scripted shows film any sort of special themed episodes in time for the game.

CBS is planning to debut a new Jerry Bruckheimer drama called Miami Medical for mid-season. That could be the show that is going to replace Three Rivers.

The only pilot to air after the Super Bowl in the last 15 years was Family Guy--the networks don't want to take a risk on something unproven. I still think BBT will be getting it but I'm hoping for Survivor--they could still air some sort of 10th anniversary special the Thursday before the game.

Down on last week, as were most CBS shows last night. Still strong though, but I'm not sure the finale will reach 15mil like I originally thought.

Yeah, upper 13 mil or maybe 14 mil if we're lucky. I would have said 15 mill too but the numbers were a mistake--it was 13.25 not 13.85. Your prediction wasn't flawed, just mislead

Everyone in this thread needs to quit their cry baby titty sucking... there's nothing and I mean NOTHING that is bad about Survivor getting a post superbowl slot. Only good things can come from that. It's guaranteed to have at the very least more than 12 million viewers (the premiere of samoa's ratings). The higher the ratings, the more likely the season will succeed. The more likely the season succeeds, the more likely the show will get renewed for 21/22.

CBS will decide what to program for the post superbowl slot based on what the network perceives will bring in the most advertising revenue during that hour, it has nothing to do with helping out whatever show it decided to program for the slot. At least in the past few years, the decision to renew Survivor for the following year has been made before the Spring season even begins airing. The renewal announcement has either come just before the Spring season starts or a week or two after the telecast of the Spring season premiere.

Given that, the ratings performance of the Fall season over the full season is what determines whether or not CBS will renew the show. Since Survivor Samoa performed well, Survivor is in no danger of not being renewed for the 2010/2011 television year. The only way that Survivor will not return is if Burnett decides to call it quits. If a Spring season is bad, the network may consider ending the show once that season ends but the show will have already been renewed for the following year. Since Fiji was a crappy season, there was some consideration given to ending the show with Fans vs. Favorites being the last season. Fortunately, the China season saved the franchise. In any case, China/FvF were already greenlit by the time Fiji started airing. Since CBS had the Super Bowl in 2007, I don't see how programming the Fiji premiere after the Super Bowl would have made any difference. You can't make filet mignon out of the cow parts that are used to make salisbury steak.

I can deal with Survivor 20 getting the post Super Bowl slot. My point is that however that season performs will not have any bearing on whether or not Survivor will be renewed for 2010/2011. It is the fall season ratings that determine whether or not CBS will renew the show for the following year. Even though there hasn't been an extended premiere since Pearl Islands, the post Super Bowl slot squelches any chance that Heroes and Villains will get an extended premiere.
