Marking The Hurt Locker off of my list. Excellent film. If there is a movie this year that has better editing, I'll go skydiving. Kathryn Bigelow would
also make an excellent Best Director winner.

You don't have to be a Mulligan fan to understand that. For one, SAG doesn't vote on "Best Ensemble", they vote for which film they actually liked the best. An Education is named and The Bland Side is not. Therefore, it's safe to assume Carey has the actor's support which ranks her ahead of Bullock in the SAG race. The actors are the largest voting branch in the Academy, yw. And then comes the BAFTAs, which are pretty much flawless when it comes to correlating their Actress wins with the Oscars. British films are always favored. An Education is a British film and Bullock is ineligible to even be nominated at the BAFTAs. The British voting block, which is pretty influential (see Atonement, Cotillard, The Reader) will not be giving their support to Bullock. |

Carey Mulligan for the WIN!
Sandra's accent in The Blind Side was hilarious. |

Guess what, if Mulligan wasn't my avatar it would probably be Vera Farmiga and yet I'm not boldly declaring her some sort of front runner. It's just the FACTS. Fact: The BAFTAs have had the same Best Actress winner as the Oscars every single year this decade EXCEPT for years in which the film didn't reach British eligibility rules. Who is winning the BAFTA this year? That's right. Carey Mulligan. Fact: No actress has won the Best Actress Oscar without winning a critics award this decade. In fact you have to go as far back as Helen Hunt to find somebody who won no MAJOR critic awards. And even then, Hunt won precursors. Sorry Sandra, looks like the odds are stacked against you. |

I think it's OK to have her as your avatar and to want her to win. You wouldn't have an avatar of someone you didn't want to win, obviously. On the
flip side, however, I have never heard this Mulligan chick before the last few pages of this thread although I am sufficiently intrigued and I will defniitely
be seeing An Education to find out what the fuss is all about. I did the same thing last year with the Happy Go Lucky chick.

Sherlock will tank after its initial weekend, but it has Jude Law and Rachel McAdams, who are pretty much my top actor and actress in terms of what I want in my bed, and Downey is hawt himself, so maybe it'll hold on for a bit. Brittany Murphy's death devastated me. I hate that Angelina overshadowed her amazing role in Girl, Interrupted. :::sobs::: |

Did Time Travelers Wife tank because it looked from the previews it'd be something the Oscars would eat up.

I didn't read the book, the commercials for the movie looked completely asinine, so I passed.

Well, I FINALLY saw an ad for The Lovely Bones, and....ugh. I really hope the commercial was misleading and playing up the "murder mystery" angle,
because if that really is all the movie's about, I'm already disappointed.

midnightproblay wrote: I'm all for Carey Mulligan in this horse race, but I don't exactly get the point of these two "FACTS." Counterpoint 1: What if this is a year where the ultimate winner's film doesn't meet British eligibility rules? Then Sandra could win, no? Counterpoint 2: There are still precursors left, which Sandra could win. Her chances at the Globes are quite good. Anyway, I haven't seen the Blind Side--I'll admit I'm a little skeptical, but I'll reserve judgment-- but based on what I have seen, Streep is probably the deserved winner with Mulligan (who I prefer) right behind her. |

Well since we are now picking our favourite based on what we've read only my pick is Mulligan.

The way it's shaking out right now, it looks like it's going to be a showdown between The Hurt Locker vs Up in the Air for Best Picture.
I would be shocked if the winner is not one of those two films. |
