Erik's point - that there is no valid reason to think that his method of play is superior to hers - was spot on.
Part of my problem is that this was largely absent from the jury discussions. She made this case plainly during the recap, but we weren't shown any kind of concise summation of it before the vote. And Natalie is quite an articulate young woman. When she wants to say it (as she did in the recap), it's easy to understand.
I guess I also have a problem with thinking of her as "coming through smelling like a rose" while Russell "had blood on his hands". Russell played a straight-up game. His initial pitch to the jury was exactly what everyone expected, straightforward and above-board in its ruthlessness. It was (I thought) a very effective way of saying "I played the hell out of this game, and I took every conceivable step to out-maneuver everyone." He took a tribe from four votes down to the majority, and even won the final IC himself when a loss would have crashed the scheme for everyone.
When you're in Natalie's position, it's actually a little tricker, I think, because you can't wholly deny your level of ruthlesness or involvement in the maneuvering, but you're unsure how much of it you can admit. People can actually take it more personally when they think you're being genuine with them in the game, but you're actually maneuvering.
In general, it's a little weird for a jury of almost all Galu to have resentments toward the most ruthless player from the opposing tribe. His ruthless attack on their dominance is totally to be expected, right? It's either that or give up, and people don't respect quitters.
My sense that the jury was just all over the place in their thinking was reinforced when I just looked at a thread having to do with the loser lodge (Ponderosa) videos. Apparently, the Galu's were just as incoherent and testy and dysfunctional while hanging out at loser lodge as they were in the game. I haven't watched the videos yet, I got the sense on that thread that there's more disgust with this group of folks and their whiny dysfunction than in typical seasons.
Really. Think about these eight people and their various ploys after the merge. A lot of them are smart people. But they somehow managed to be collectively clueless. They were just all over the place, in their thinking, both in the game and when hanging out afterwards.
And, I would say, in their voting rationales. I wouldn't know how to appeal to this particular group of people if I was trying to plan it.
