It's pretty obvious that Natalie was with Russell with this very plan of action the whole time, or at least after the Marisa and Betsy boots. Russell is a delusional idiot.

Also, Natalie did more than just "be nice to people." She actually built friendships with them. Pretty much everyone who voted for Natalie said that they voted for her over Mick because Natalie interacted with them more, so they all had better relationships with Natalie. Natalie did what many of the great winners in the past (like Parvati and Todd), forge friendships with people strong enough that they are okay with you having voted them out so that they will give you the million dollars.

Russell may have dominated the strategic game, but that is irrelevant. As soon as he started trying to threaten people to follow him and flaunt his victories in their faces, he made people actively dislike him. Russell didn't lose because he blindsided everyone and owned them, he lost because he is the single biggest asshole the show has ever had (with the same level of delusions as Coach). Think about it: Who are you going to give the million dollars to, the person you like, or the person you hate, given that there is no other "criteria" off of which to base your votes and they both voted the same way every time and Galu was a bomb just waiting to go off. The 3 Foas all recognized that Russell would lose in the final vote against any of them, so they all tried to get him to take them to the end (after all, Russell was the single biggest goat since Steph in guatemala).

Had Russell payed attention during his watching of Micronesia, or had he even watched China, he would have known that it IS possible to completely dominate the strategic game and still win. It just requires a social game. Todd's opening speech to the jury was largely about the social aspects of the game, how he built relationships and friendships with everyone, even though he did stab most of them in the back. He got people to respect both his gameplay and his integrity as a person. Parvati did the same thing. Russell only did one, and he did the one that was less important. General rule: The more well-liked player, regardless of their strategic play, will win the FTC vote. You can get a few votes for strategy, but it will almost always come down to personal connections. Russell, and everyone who thinks that Russell deserved to win, fails to understand how the game of survivor works.
