I am glad Samoa has taken its place as one of Survivor's greatest seasons! I think it's because Samoa just ended recently and thus couldn't have gotten that many votes.

Posts: 13 (02/13/10 05:58 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	cant decide on exact order, so just divide them in the groups (and they can possibly change, during the course of time): Nostalgia: Australia, Africa and Maquesas (First seasons i´ve seen, i totally loved them back then, even if I dont necessary prefere them now. I especially dont like confused - and usually also not very dramatic - chalenges. But casts were fine and I we got a lot of footage of the surviving aspect) Personal favourites: Pearl Islands, All-Stars, Palau, Guatemala, Exile Island, Cook Islands, Micronesia, Tocantins, Samoa Dont mind: Amazon, Fiji, China Bored by: Borneo (for me its the weakest season), Thailand, Vanuatu, Gabon (chalenges sucked, best players went too early, Bob is one of the weakest winners and there were too many annoying complainers like Crystal, who made watching unbearable)

Posts: 900 (02/13/10 06:27 PM) MESS member Reply Quote More Recent Posts	I will admit some biases here: I have a nostalgic love for the first four seasons, and freely admit that I have not watched them in years. I have a bias for any season with a geeky mastermind that does well. And of the seasons of recent years, I do like the smaller cast 16 castaway seasons because of the character development. And I have never liked Pearl Islands even though I feel like I should. Seasons I loved: 1. Amazon-- All the twists, all the turns, alliance shifting, Rob is hilarious, Heidi is unintentionally hilarious... just a blast even though I was not a fan of the final two (although I have grown to appreciate Jenna in the years since.) 2. Borneo-- Although I concede that the strategic game was nothing short of pathetic, the characters were awesome, it was so fresh and new and unexpected, and watching Richard Hatch leap in, figure out the game, and watch the rest try and catch up with him... incredible. I think it gets underrated because everyone that came to it after the fact gets frustrated by the sheer number of contestants that aren't playing strategically, but in terms of characterization, it's awesome. 3. Micronesia-- This is what All-Stars should have been like. The black widow brigade, the blindsides, the twists, the turns... the only drawback I would see is that I think that the Fan tribe was pretty weak strategically... it was like watching a JV team play the state champions. I will admit, though, that I was wowed by the post-merge part of the competition, as the early episodes were pretty underwhelming. I suspect my love of this season will fade with time. 4. Marquesas-- It seems like this season drops in people's estimation over the years, but I really enjoyed it. The cast was pretty good, I think that the concept of a cross-tribal underdogs alliance was revolutionary at the time even though it seems old hat now, and we had our first example of a tribe run into the ground. The final two was a bit weak and WTF, I will admit. Seasons I liked: 5. China-- One of the better recent seasons. I think the smaller cast helped with character development, I genuinely liked the entire final three, and there were enough interesting twists and turns to keep it interesting. 6. Outback-- I think Outback was one of the best pre-merge seasons, I really do. Bickering Ogakor vs. cohesive Kucha, pigs and burn victims and chickens and rocks and tiebreakers revealed... it wasn't until after the merge (particularly after Jerri's vote) that it really started to lose steam. Again, part of the suspense is taken away by the fact that the endgame cast, which was predominantly southern and conservative, was reacting to having watched a scheming gay nudist win and wanted validation that a "good person" won. I am not convinced that Tina is less of a schemer than Rich, but it was a deserving final two. 7. Exile Island -- What an engaging bunch of weirdos! It was a fun cast, lots of suspense, and you got to see the most bizarre alliance ever crack under the pressure of not being able to get rid of immunity whore Terry. And I do love Cirie. 8. Africa-- Again, the show was still fresh then, and there were a lot of big characters. Some demerits for the claustrophobic setting and the fact that everyone had a chance to win, and threw it away to spite an errant tribemate. 9. Palau-- A strange bifurcated season... basically back-to-back postmerge seasons. At the time, watching Ulong implode, Stephenie succeed, and then the Koror tribe begin to have to play was interesting, but I don't think the season is quite as good as I initially thought it was... doesn't hold up as well. 10. Tocantins -- Yeah, I liked it, and I know I am the only one. A little too much Coach, but there were some good strategic plays, some interesting underdogs, and I enjoyed seeing JT and Stephen triumph! Seasons I was neutral on: 11. Pearl Islands-- On paper, I should love it... lots of twists and turns, interesting dynamics, and a winner I do genuinely like (Sandra!) But... I can't stand Rupert or Fairplay. And they get a LOT of airtime this season. And, truthfully, I wasn't wild about most of the rest of the cast. 12. Vanuatu-- It was okay. Chris was brilliantly slimy. Ami was a true alpha female before going out in flames. I like Eliza. Some good female players. Not overly memorable but I didn't really dislike it. 13. Guatemala-- All I can say is that, truthfully, it is one of the seasons I remember the least about. I didn't dislike it, but it just doesn't leave an indelible mark on my mind. I don't know why, but the cast didn't stick with me... all of the non Steph and Rafe contestants blur into one short-tempered testosterone fueled man and one vaguely pleasant under the radar woman. I should probably rewatch it. 14. Cook Islands-- Not a great season, but I do like the Aitu alliance. Yul vs. Ozzy was a satisfying final matchup, and with the mutiny, there was some drama, but I do think it the season started very slowly and dully until it picked up post-merge. Seasons I did not like: 15. Gabon-- I know everyone else liked it, but I found the cast unpleasant and unengaging. It wasn't boring, but I didn't like the cast enough to really feel invested in who won. 16. Fiji-- Thank goodness Earl and Yau-Man made it to the end, because I probably would have bailed on it at the halfway point. I did like the Edgardo blindside, too. Seasons so bad I lost interest: 17. All Stars-- Such an incredible idea on paper, with a mostly brilliant cast. The problem: anything that COULD have gone wrong did go wrong.... Rudy, RobC and Tina out early, Sue's uncomfortable exit, players like Jenna L, ShiiAnn, and Amber making the endgame, and just a general feeling that you were losing respect for everyone involved in the monstrosity. Amber played well, I guess, but her winning felt like a punchline. 18. Samoa-- The only thing interesting about the entire season was watching Russell cry like a bitch when he lost. The cast was boring for the most part, and not terribly likable. 19. Thailand-- You can have a boring but pleasant cast (see: Marquesas) or a dysfunctional but entertaining cast (Exile Island) but a bunch of boring assholes? Excruciating. Tocantins - There is nothing interesting about this season except Brendan and Spencer being eye candies. They shouldve lasted longer. Memorable People: Spencer, Brendan and Erinn 6. Cook Islands - I think the 4 tribes thing shouldve lasted until top 16. 2 episodes is just too little for us to sink it in. It could also haunt Hiki's action to vote a strong guy out so early and save JP from an all girls-alliance. But I got my satisfaction when Rebecka and Jenny were voted in the double boot. Other than that, this was a good season. Good casting, ok editting, predictable gameplay but entertaining. Memorable People: Yul, Adam, Candice, Jonathan, Parvati and Ozzy 5. Gabon - Not so good season at first since I was expecting it to be as good as China. It wasn't but I like the Onion alliance, Corrine's bitchyness, Crystal vs Randy, Kenny's cunningness, Bob humiliating Randy, Crystal getting the cold treatment in Ponderosa, Sugar blindsiding Crystal and Crystal being missearable. Dont get me wrong, I like Crystal. She's just entertaining to watch that way that's all. Gabon has many things to offer. However, this season lost some points because Bob won. He rode Sugar's coattails. Sugar should've won that season. Memorable People: Crystal, Sugar, Kenny, Corrine and Ace 4. Borneo - It was a pain watching the first 4 episodes of this season. The only thing that kept me going was "this is how they did it the first time" thing. But as it progressed it got interesting. This is one of the four seasons Ive watched so far that I was wanting to watch the reunion and recap episode (if there is any); the other 3 are China, Australian Outback and Africa. If only we get to see more of Greg, it could've been a better season. However, it was enjoying. I liked how the survivors were naive. If only Pagong kept Joel, we probably would be using "Tagied" instead of "Pagonged" now. Memorable People: Richard, Susan, Colleen, Jenna, Greg and Joel 3. Africa - I can't understand why this is the least hyped season. Ive been reading forums for weeks now and Africa was the season I have the least knowledge in. Surely the generation gap in Samburu was interesting. I was expecting Kim Johnson to be eliminated early but she stayed until the final 2. I was expecting Lindsey and Silas to last long. There is nothing predictable about this season (except Linda's boot). I was mostly interested in the finale. The jury especially Teresa, Kim Powers, Brandon and Kelly had interesting questions. Also, I liked Brandon's words when he voted againts Ethan and Tom's words when he voted againts Kim. Im actually searching for the reunion episode now. Unlike the bottom 5 seasons wherein I have to force myself to watch the reunion. Memorable People: Ethan, Lex, Teresa, Kim Powers, Brandon and Silas 2. China - A season has finally beaten China. The best thing about China is that everyone had equal edits. Its good when you feel everybody's presence. I also like it when survivors become misserable. In China's case, when it rains and gets muddy. They have to hide in that little cave of theirs. I hate James for being dumb. I hope it was Aaron in his place. There was a lot of "the human side of the survivors" kind of stuff. Also, China is one of the most unique locations. Im seing bamboos instead of coconut trees. Finally, Todd is my ultimate favorite. That alone adds a lot of points for this season. He dominated the season, masterminded almost every boot and made fun of people and still won. Also, I loved every answer Todd gave in the finale. Memorable People: Todd, Courtney, Amanda, Peih-gee, Frosti and Aaron 1. Australian Outback - No wonder its the best rated season. Everyone except Nick had good edits. What made me like the season the most was the good personalities and the season's story. Seeing the survivors surviving was really awesome. Specifically, watching the survivors misserable and hungry and got their camps washed away. Also, this season has a lot of different and likeable personalities. I enjoyed this season a lot. This season is epic. Elizabeth, Colby, Keith and Tina were the best top 4 ever. I really like everyone's role. This is the most "human side" of survivor Ive seen so far. Strategies is tiring to watch. Though it's interesting, I just dont like it when strategies are shown more over camp life and "getting to know the survivors better" part. Memorable People: Tina, Colby, Keith, Elizabeth, Alicia, Jeff, Jerri, Amber, Maralyn and Kel Elmo posted something I can agree with ^_^ There is a Borneo reunion but there was no recap. Go YouTube it.

I wonder why that is? Other observation: I can tell who the fans are that started watching in the past few years and then tracked down the early seasons, because the first three or four seasons I feel were more character driven rather than challenge and strategy driven. You get to know the cast members better, at the expense that the challenges are much less elaborate (and receive much less screen time) and the strategy aspect is downplayed... there seemed to be more of a mentality of tribal loyalty above individual glory in those first three seasons. The way these episodes are edited, and the entire mentality that goes into the game... well, it just feels like a completely different game. At the time, it definitely did feel much more suspenseful, because there was no precedent (they wouldn't vote for Richard, would they? Will the Kucha tribe be picked off, or will they vote off Jerri first? Will Kelly defect from the Boron tribe to join with Samburu? A switch! What will happen now?) I think it's equally compelling television to watch, but if you've seen the later seasons first and come back to the early seasons I can see why it would not feel like the game you love to watch.

This is a good post. Survivor Thailand was the last season that was principly character driven and since that season was univerally disliked, SEG may have decided to focus more on the game itself (eg. challenges and strategy) since after Thailand SEG realized that couldn't rely on the cast itself to deliver a good season. On the other hand, it may have always been the intention of SEG that the show was mainly about the game dynamics but that most of the contestants played so passively and conservatively (eg. tribal loyalty), SEG had no choice but to make the show more character driven. The gmeplay was so passive in the early seasons that SEG even had to introduce the chop challenge in season 4 (which led to the first power shift) to give the contestants a kick in the ass to start playing the game. The cast didn't really start playing the game of Survivor till Amazon (well Rob C.) or Pearl Islands. Oc cousre, Borneo had to be a character driven season because no one had played before and they didn't know what to do (except for Richard who I think had seen Swiss Family Robinson)

I do agree about the SEG disappointed with the gameplay, but Amazon, although a heavily strategic season, still had a nice balance between characteers and strategy.

Pearl Islands As low as I have CI and Fiji, it's still pretty high compared to most people, but I think they hold up due to nostalgia for me, as they were the last two seasons I watched during original airing until halfway through Samoa. (which is, coincedentally, directly between them) I have still only seen bits and pieces of Africa, Marquesas and Thailand so my rankings of them may not be completely fair. And if HvV was to go in the ranking right now, it would be somewhere just outside the top ten, as it is intriguing, but certainly nothing special so far.
