I don't believe this is a valid argument. By my logic luck benefits and hurts them all. Give me a contestant and I can do a what if in both directions. For the twist in Fiji, yeah it sucked for Michelle, but what if Melissa hadn't freaked out. That twist may have "screwed" someone else over. I think people look at events for what they are but there are SO many things that shape that event and the things leading up to it. I can watch a game of chess and see every move. I can't do this for Survivor. Every word, action, conversation is a chess move. We are not privy to all this information. The editors can make it appear however they like. I can, and I believe the only way you can say who the best player is, are through the results. You can value what if scenario's and perceived safety and perceived control, but those things ultimately didn't happen. It's speculation.
If we needed an objective criteria for "best player", then "=winner" would feel that role in a very mediocre way.
But my point is, we don't need an objective criteria for "best player". Everyone has their own idea of who played the best game each time, and that's good.
They already have a word for "winner" in english. The word is "winner". There's no other word for "best player", so why ignore the nuances in the difference between the two definitions by merging them together?
Look I don 't want people to get the wrong impression. I'm not really trying to change anyone's opinion. You are free to think the way you like. I'm trying to make my OWN opinion more nuanced and refined. Had you asked me who I thought the best player was I would have said "Oh the winner!" but I wouldn't have been able to back it up. By posting in this thread and hearing the dissent from other posters has helped shed light and refined my opinion. I'm doing this for myself ultimately. If you don't agree I'm not sweating it. I just want to make sure that what I believe isn't flawed by my own standards. What better way to do that than to post at Sucks and get the posters to rip apart my posts. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind. If I've helped shed light on Survivor for anyone else and have helped anyone else see things differently, or confirm what they've thought through this thread then that's good too.
One person I WISH would read this thread however is Jeff Probst. He obviously has the mindframe like a lot of posters on Sucks, which is fine. But it worries me when the host doesn't fundamentally understand the show he's been hosting for 19 seasons. With a comment like "I think Russ deserves to win!" illustrates this to me. He can continue to think the way he does but I don't think he's bothered to see the other side. If he's read this thread and still feel the same way I can respect that. I just don't think anyone's bothered to challenge him.
**Sorryyyy for all the edits!!! I know it seems like I'm backpedaling, but through this thread it's helped me further understand everyone else. I just don't personally see any logic and don't believe it's logical in any sense. People value speculation. A LOT.
If you see any holes in my arguments though, continue to poke at them.
