Worst: Last Night at Twisted River by Irving. Not really as bad as Dan Brown, but it was a big disappointment.

I haven't read it but I'm having a hard time understanding how anything by irving could be the worst book of the year.
Except maybe son of a circus - that one blew. |

2009 was a weak year for new books. The best I read was probably "The Year of the Flood" by Margaret Atwood. I don't know what the worst was.
Probably something by James Patterson.
Keep an eye out for The Passage by Justin Cronin. It is going to be the big book of 2010. |

Beach Music by Pat Conroy. Unrealistic dialogue, 2-dimensional characters, and a precious, maudlin writing style made this piece of shit sheer torture.

MsJones4 wrote:Completely in agreeance in terms of BOTH bests! Edgar Sawtelle was brillance. Hoping the sophomore jinx bypasses Wroblewski. I read Julie and Julia a few years back, and it does suck. Powell is just not a compelling writer. I did love the Julia part of the movie though. Wish it had been all Julia, actually. The worst book for me was The Secret. Bah. What a bunch of pretentious crap. Here's a secret...it sucks. I never made it past page 30....and I wanted to beat the friend who recommended it to death with it (but since it's so light, it wouldn't have worked). Two of the best books that I read in '09 were kids' lit...(being a teacher, I usually find droves of good kids books that far surpass the NY Times books). You want something enchanting, try Kate DiCamillo's The Magician's Elephant, you want something heartbreaking, compelling and uplifting all at once, read Laurie Halse Anderson's Chains. |

Best: The Help or How I Became a Famous Novelist
Worst: Nanny Returns. What a festering pile of shit. It even out-festered The Lost Symbol. |

Thanks! The Apprentice is available at my library so I'll start with it. I tend to hook on to an author and read all their books.

Best "The Year of the Flood" by Margaret Atwood. "Fear No Evil" by Allison Brennan
Worst "Twilight" which was the only book I didn't finish this year. I couldn't go on. How many times, and how many different ways can Edward say "I want to drink all your blood and kill you, but I won't I won't let myself!" So BORING! |

Best: Christ. I dunno. Probably "The Children's Book". Worst...would be "least effective", and probably "The Great Perhaps",
but even that was okay. I toss a book aside if it pisses me off. And I don't get the "Twisted River" hate. SO much better Irving than that
"Until I Find You" crap. That one was a struggle to get through, second only to the OH HEY I TALK FUNNY SO LET'S PUT ALL MY FUCKING DIALOG IN
CAPS THROUGH THE WHOLE BOOK BECAUSE MY READERS ARE FUCKING MORONS nightmare "A Prayer For Owen Meaney".

I agree on the julie/julia thing. I've been slogging through the book on and off and finally broke down and watched the movie a few weeks ago. I thought
the movie was delightful. The book is tedious.
