I agree, it's crazy that people go in without watching the show. I hadn't seen all the seasons just bc I didn't have time between being cast and being on the show. Also, I deliberately didn't want to watch earlier seasons, bc the strategy has evolved so much - I didn't want to study outmoded ideas about the game. Amazon was the only early season I watched.

But there were people who went in having hardly seen any episodes. That's insane! How can you play a game whose rules you hardly know? Those people invariably don't do very well, and justifiably so.

In general I think you are right, but one counter-example is Earl Cole, who imo is an underrated winner. The way he picked up on the game so quickly makes him all the more impressive.

Which other seasons did you watch before you went? Have you seen any (besides Samoa) since?

That's a great point about Earl. I watched 6, 10, and 12-17 (or what had aired of 17). I had already seen 1 and 2. I tried watching Vanuatu right when I came back and made it about halfway through, but it was too intense to watch Survivor right after having been on Survivor! I've watched Pearl Islands and am almost through All Stars now. I want to watch Marquesas next....

You will enjoy Marquesas it was a great season and from a strategy perspective you will think it is interesting. I think it is great you managed to play the game so well strategy wise having not learned from other seasons.
